In 1787 the Americans did a meeting to make a strong government. In that meeting they wrote a document about the government they were making. In the document it described three compromises for three problems that some states had with others. The problems were Representation in Congress, Counting of Population and Slave Trade.

Representation: States with more population and states with less population were disagreeing on how much representatives each state has. Larger populated countries wanted to have more representatives for more population and smaller populated countries wanted the number of representatives to be equal. So they made a compromise called the Great Compromise which made it so that there were two legislature branches: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The amount of representatives for the Senate was equal and amount for the House of Representatives was based on population (1 representative for every 40,000 people).

Counting of Population: Southern states were disagreeing with the Northern states about if slaves count in the population. Southern states had many slaves so to get more representatives they wanted slaves to be counted. The Northern states argued that slaves had no rights and weren't citizens they shouldn't be considered part of the population. So they made a compromise called the Three Fifths Compromise which gave three representatives for every five slaves.

Slave Trade: The Southern states wanted to trade slaves as it was a right at that time. The Northern states argued that that was inhuman and slaves shouldn't be traded for other stuff. So they just said that slave trade be allowed for 20 more years and after that the Congress could regulate it.

The Louisiana Purchase was made in 1803. It started in the French and Indian war when France gave much of its land to Spain as they did not want Britain to get the land. Later, Spain secretly gave it back to France. When Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801, he wanted New Orleans for trade. He asked Napoleon Bonaparte who was the leader of France at that time, for part of the Louisiana territory including New Orleans for 10 mil. Napoleon was fighting 2 war one in the Caribbean and one with England so he needed money. He offered the whole territory for 15 mil. Jefferson approved it and it became known as the Louisiana Purchase.
