AR - an (o)ngoing cycle

We can identify this AR investigation as Burns says is part of an on-going cycle, we can say that the teachers “have selected certain issues that were problematic or challenging and given them special attention”.

We can observe how throughout the process of the AR, the teachers collect data using different resources as they analyse it in different ways. They plan and move forward on their investigation. We can see that they follow certain steps as Burns states, such as:

1. Assembling your data: Collect all the data you have as well as any ongoing reflections

2. Coding the data: coding your data into more specific patterns or categories (coding is discussed in more detail in the next sections

3. Comparing the data: Once your coding is complete, compare the categories or patterns across your different sets of data

4. Building meanings and interpretations: Look for more abstract ‘big picture’ concepts

5. Reporting the outcomes: how you can present your research and what you have found to tell others.

The authors do the process of analysing and synthesising qualitative data, and as Burns also explains we could say that they do it with an “emic” approach, as they look at data from the perspectives of people closely involved in the research context and analyse their opinions and views exactly as we find them. In this case, they do so by “(…) using an online blogging platform. After the event, all 20 students participated in semi-structured videoed interviews. (…) The data was analysed to identify emerging themes in the written blogs and interview transcripts. A post-project questionnaire was distributed to participants”

We can say, after reading the findings and conclusions, that they are able to keep the pedagogical focus of the research in mind.
