Vicksburg Siege, day 2
The siege is long, the booming of the cannons goes on night and day, sleep is hard to gain a lot of. The smoke of the cannons covers some of the hill we are on, and the smell is overwhelming with the multitude of the shots. The cold steel of the cannonballs litters the Confederate fort, my job scope out the fort. The smoke sometimes makes it hard to tell if they surrender, and the thunder from them as well makes it hard to hear orders. I know the importance of the battle, it just becomes difficult at time with the cannons constantly firing for 2 days. The food is low, the only thing is hardtack, and it does satisfy hunger sorta, it tastes bad, and as the name suggests, it is very hard of the soldiers here chipped a tooth on it. Hope it ends soon.

Antietam

September 18th, 1862.

Dear Sister of mine,

Yesterdays battle was the bloodiest battle I've seen so far. So many young men died, including my best bud john.
He died in my arms, I could swear he was trying to tell me something but alas I could not hear over the persistent popping of gunfire. In all honesty, I've gotten used to the sound.
When I looked down at John all I could see was the blood, all I could smell and taste was it too. So metallic.
I tried to calm him down, tried to stay out of the way of gunfire. But little sister, I'm afraid I have been shot. I'm writing this from the infirmary. please, young one. send me your prays, I hope to god I make it back to hold you in my arms once again.

With love,
Your brother.

The Battle of Gettysburg

Dear Family,
This may be the worst experience ever. Waking up every day to the stench the manybodies of the camp. Getting up to go outside to the freezing wind. As we moved closer to the other army every day, I could feel my blood pressure increasing. When the day came you could hear the yelling of the other army miles away and when the battle began millions of bullets being shot many people falling to ground I felt anxiety. Wanting to run away and get from battle but knowing I couldn’t made it worse.
