This is where I decided to leap from an accounting role within the corporate industry to start a new career within the zoo industry (animal/tourism industry)Benefits of this new beginning and new changes included personal changes within myself – I became a lot more confident and became more open-minded and flexible with my work processes (animals don’t operate only Mon-Fri; 8.30am to 5pm). Professionally; I learned a whole lot of new skill sets in dealing with the public; learning more on a much larger variety of animals that I had worked with beforehand and also continuing to grow my administrative skill sets. I also dealt with cultural changes including some major weather changes due to moving from the South Pacific to North America. All of these changes put me out of my comfort zone; however I can honestly say that I have no regrets and haven’t looked back since then as I’m happy about my career choice (in fact I feel really priviledged) and believe I’m making a positive difference to the animals under my management as well as for conservation in general.
