The workbook this week covers ethical and unethical communication. Your task is to find an example of UNethical communication, and using the information on stream, detail at least two reasons as to why it could be considered unethical. Have a look at my Breast Cancer NZ padlet entry for an example.

While this advertisement is for a very good cause, the use of word contagious is very misleading. While the advert is meant to convey how breast cancer impacts the family of patients and that it can affect anyone, this advertisement was forced to be changed after public backlash. Why is it unethical?

Implying breast cancer is contagious is scientifically incorrect, teaching witnesses false information about the disease.

Using a misleading word like contagious creates a harsh stigma for women with breast cancer, who are already doing it tough. By making them sound like their condition is infectious, it further isolates them and does the opposite of what a breast cancer advert should do. It should be empowering women to get regular checks and support one another rather than dividing and stigmatising them and their condition.

A third point can speak to the emotional exploitation of the women and their family members. Cancer is an emotional diagnosis and journey, and it is cruel to incorrectly label the disease and paint an overtly negative picture of the suffering between patients and families. Using 'contagious' implies family members who support patients are vulnerable by association and potentially infectious, which has negative normative power in shaping narratives around breast cancer in Aotearoa.

This ad uses a fat person’s image beside the phrase “Save the whales, lose the blubber: go vegetarian.” This contrast suggests that a vegetarian diet will help you lose weight and that being overweight is undesirable.. Some people find this body-shaming and unethical because it perpetuates harmful stereotypes about weight and appearance.

simplifying a major issue: The ad simplifies two topics: personal health and protection of animals. Although it's a good idea to promote plant-based diets, not everyone will find it to be directly related to losing weight. Which implies false advertising. Also, the phrase "Save the whales" is reduced to a joke, which could devalue the environmental efforts needed to protect marine life and whales.

3.insensitive: The tone of the ad may come across as cruel. It makes fun of overweight people, which may turn off people who would normally support PETA. The message of the ad says that being overweight is undesirable, add to society's stereotypes about body image.

A giant, brightly colored chicken strutting around a chicken farm while hip-hop raps played in the background was seen by some as a sign of disrespect for chickens, and by animal rights groups as a metaphor for poor farming conditions at KFC.

2.

This advertisement is for a skin bleach.

With the brand name being fair and lovely it implies that if you aren't fair you aren't good enough or 'lovely'.

It is a harmful and degrading ad placed in a public area, meaning anyone young or old can see it, this can be extremely harmful to young girls who are being told that they aren't beautiful if they don't have fair and light skin by this ad.

It is telling us that being more fair-skinned is more desirable and the 'beauty standard' which is completely false and a wrong idea to push onto people. People should be embraced no matter the tone of their skin and this ad is completely tone deaf and dangerous.

Skin lightening is dangerous as most contain harmful chemicals and should not be recommended or endorsed.

The advertisement promotes Mr. Clean cleaning products with the slogan "Mother's Day, get back to the Job that really matters," implying that buying these products as a Mother's Day gift is the essential task.

This message can be seen as problematic, as it allows the stereotype of women's roles to be mainly domestic and implies that mothers should prioritise cleaning over other aspects of their lives. By making the significance of Mother's Day seem like a less important time to celebrate and appreciate mothers and women, the ad risks reinforcing harmful gender norms and stereotypes. Using humour to normalise this way of thinking could contribute to women internalising restrictive beliefs about their capabilities/ roles.

Overall, the ad may have unintended negative effects on how women perceive themselves and their societal roles.
