There are many causes that contributed to the event of the East/West Schism of 1054AD. Some of these causes are the geographical distances, Filioque, linguistics, theological and cultural beliefs of the faiths. Geographical distance is how the Western Church was in Rome while the Eastern church was in Constantinople. Filioque is how the two churches had different beliefs about the father, the son and the holy spirit. The Eastern church believed that the Holy Spirit comes from only the Father while the Western church believes that the Holy Spirit comes from the Father and the Son. Languages was another cause due to the West speaking Latin and the East speaking Greek.

Major causes for the event of the Great Schism were through the differences of the East and West church in 1054 AD. The Seperation was caused by the languages between the east and west as they were different, the east speaking greek and the west speaking latin. Another cause for the event was the way the west praised icons such as statues of Mary and the cross, this was seen as a violation of the second commandment by the east. Lastly the issue of the supremacy of the pope - The pope was originally one of four patriarchs of the church Rome, Jerusalum, Alexandria and Constantinople.

Before the Great Schism, there were many disagreements and differences between the East and West churches. The main differences were the cultures, and the languages, where the Eastern church spoke Greek and the Western church spoke Latin. Three major events that contributed to the Great Schism were the Latin Church's addition of the term 'filioque' to the Nicene Creed, Michael Cerularius's disagreement with the Catholic practice of not allowing clergy memebers to marry and when he excommunicated bishops of Constantinople for using the term 'Filioque'. These significant features lead to the biggest split Christianity has ever known.

The major cause of the Great Schism was the mutual excommunications by the Pope and Patriarch. They both had different ideologies and both wanted power. Disputes over political, linguistic, cultural, economic and theological differences also played a large part in the split. Some examples of evident differences included celibacy, un-leavened and leavened bread as the Eucharist and the authority of the Pope. Both Rome and Constantinople believed that they deserved to be the head of the Church. Emporer Constantine wanted to create a new Christian Empire due to the growth of Paganism in Rome. He then decided to move his empire to Bysantium (East), which was later renamed Constantinople. The Roman Pope had claimed that he held authority over the four Eastern Patriarchs. On the contrary the Eastern Patriarchs claimed that the Roman Pope held authority over the Western Christians.
