 I was also raised in the Philippines during my childhood before moving to Canada and living in such a tropical island like the Philippines really helped me connect with nature at a young age. I was always outside looking for an adventure like swimming, climbing trees, catching tadpoles etc. and as an adult, those experiences have helped grow my appreciation for our environment and how important it is to preserve the land for future generations, so they get the chance to experience the bests parts of nature.

Growing up as a Filipino immigrant, I’ve had influences from my own culture along with Western culture. As different as they are, both of these cultures have positively influenced my environmental worldview and have shown me multiple perspectives of the environment. In my culture, we have a special connection with our environment. We like to use the resources and land nature has given us, so our country is rich in agriculture with an abundance of rice fields and farmers. The relationship farmers have with their environment is special to them and has taught me to respect nature and appreciate everything it has to offer.

My family is very interconnected with nature and the environment. Every summer my dad gardens an abundance of produce in our backyard which he learned from his own parents. This summer he grew eggplants, potatoes, onions, green beans, and cherry tomatoes. My mom loves collecting plants so our living room is starting to look like a jungle. She developed that hobby from her dad as well, so our interconnectedness with nature is passed onto us from multiple generations.

I was raised by 2 religious parents who were Christian and whenever I would go to Sunday school as a kid they would always preach about treating individuals the way you would like to be treated, which has resonated with me to this day. I apply this passage to not just human beings, but any living thing such as nature. It’s important to remember to treat our environment well because It provides so much for us and the least we can do is give back by being environmentally friendly with our decisions as much as we can.

Getting to experience different parts of my country has been very eye-opening and has made me gain so much gratitude and appreciation for nature and the world in general. Swimming in the ocean, snorkelling with the fish and seeing the coral reefs was a very surreal experience. It made me feel one with the water and it was so peaceful I felt like time had just stopped.
