Andrius and Lina met in their train car from Lithuania to Serbia with the idea of no clue where they were going. After reaching their slave camp, they soon fell in love with each other. Soon the soldiers took Lina and her family away from Andrius and were separated. In the end when the entire war is over they find each other and get married

The book's main character, Lina Vilkas, experiences many hardships throughout the plot. She is a 15-year-old girl who is taken away by soldiers and her family and she is forced to do slave work in Serbia. After going through the time of her mother dying, being separated away from her father, and having to only take care of her brother she still pulled through and made it out alive.

As she learned and snuck around barely keeping herself alive she fought hard and through without much. She found her lover and after her mother passing she too care for herself and her brother. At the end when they escaped Lina and Andrius married and lived together after all.
