It is common for teens to try and fit in with all of the other kids by doing what is considered to be "cool". An example would be when kids go to parties and are peer pressured into making bad decisions like drinking, smoking, taking drugs, etc.

In this quote Marjane is mad at her mother because she is pressing the fact that she made the choice to skip school, so she can hang out with friends. Marjane is having a hard time with school because the new government made veils mandatory, and was instilling religious values she didn't agree with. So she is at the same time rebelling against the new system and her mother, both of whom she views as dictators.

In this quote Marjane made the choice of smoking a cigarette she stole from her uncle to rebel against her mother and the system at the same time. She didn’t do it because she liked smoking, rather she liked having the freedom to smoke. At this point in the story the regime she lived in became more repressive because of the war. And smoking that cigarette made her feel like she had more freedom than she had.

In this quote Juliet is upset about the position she’s in because her father wants her to marry someone she doesn't love. So Juliet chooses to attempt asserting her personal freedom by faking her death to get out of her marriage, and live with Romeo.
