The Imperial Japanese invaded Hong Kong on the 8th of December, 1941 and gained control following the Battle of Hong Kong, where the Hong Kong government surrendered after 18 days of fighting on the 25th of December. This Christmas was coined "Black Christmas". The Imperial Japanese occupied Hong Kong for three years and eight months until Japan surrendered at the end of the war. The Japanese regarded Hong Kong as a supply and repair depot in East Asia and only constructed the runway of Kai Tak airport alongside a few facilities along the port. Hong Kong's dockyards and shipping potential were not used as only the Japanese Army occupied Hong Kong, not the Japanese Navy.

The Imperial Japanese invaded and occupied provinces of China in the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945. The war began with the Marco Polo/Lugou Bridge Incident on the 7th of July, 1937. Following the incident, the Japanese invaded and occupied Beijing, Shanghai and the Chinese capital of Nanking, resulting in the horrendous Rape of Nanking. The Sino-Soviet Treaty of 1937 provided Chinese armies with materials, allowing them to counterattack the Japanese. In 1939, Chinese troops successfully retaliated against the invasions of Changsha and Guangxi, leading the war into a stalemate. The Japanese also failed to overthrow the defensive Chinese communist forces in Shaanxi. However, the Japanese ultimately succeeded in occupying Nanking after the year-long Battle of South Guangxi. From November 1939, Chinese nationalist and communist troops began retaliating against the Japanese in the countryside and central China. The United States started reinforcing China in a series of boycotts and sanctions against Japan, with American mercenaries directly supporting China. After the United States declared war on Japan, the aid flow to China increased, with the Lead-Lease act directing 1.6-1.8 million USD to China. In 1944, Japan launched Operation Ichi-Go, which ultimately failed to gain control over Henan and Changsha. In 1945, China launched large counteroffensives in South China, retaking West Hunan and Guangxi. Japan formally surrendered on the 2nd of September 1945 and returned all territories to China.
