The set up of the desks and chairs affects the management of student behavior. Students are responsible for their individual desk as well as getting their chair in the morning and stacking it at the end of the day. It facilitates student learning because they are able to collaborate and have group discussions when prompted. I would use this same set up in my own classroom to create a community-like environment.

School-Wide Expectations

Posting this chart at the front of the classroom helps manage classroom behavior because students are able to see what is expected of them. I thought it was noteworthy because it lists the positive behaviors expected of students during all times of the day in several areas of the school. It impacts student learning and behavior in the classroom because knowing what positive behaviors are being looked for, students are more likely to adhere to this good behavior. I would also like to post something like this in my classroom to show what the school is expecting, not just the teacher.

Class Schedule

Posting the class schedule for students to see was notable to me because it helps students keep a time frame of what their day typically consists of. This assists in managing the classroom because students are not constantly asking what they are doing next, and it keeps track of how much time students will spend during each activity. In my own classroom, I will have a schedule posted for students to see so they are aware of what is going on.

READY Expectations

The school has what they call READY Procedures. READY is an acronym for the basic expectations of all students in the classroom. It helps with managing students by outlining what their behavior should look like while the teacher is giving a lesson. Even though this is specific to the elementary school, I would still like to post this in my own classroom as it is a clever way for students to easily remember and follow the rules.

During the lesson on rocks and minerals, the teacher hung this poster up at the front of the room. Students were able to use it for reference during their quick check and quiz. It had a positive impact on student learning because they were able to look at the material several times and learn it. Additionally, there are visual representations of each rock and mineral. The poster organizes the information for better comprehension. I would use posters like this one in my classroom to support student learning and organization of information.

This math chart shows a couple examples of how to divide using partial quotients. These problems were done as whole class. They remained up on the board until the unit test to help students remember the steps. There is one that shows no remainder and one that shows a remainder. These examples supported student learning because they were utilized as a reference sheet throughout the unit. I think students having an example to reference back to is important during a lesson. Therefore, I will also hang up relevant references and examples during each unit of math.

I thought this board as noteworthy because of how it is organized. Since there is a math ramp (advanced) and standard class, they are separated in two columns. The science, however, is the same for both classes. From the top, it begins with the unit number. Next, it lists the benchmarks before the learning targets. At the bottom, it lists how students will be measured for understanding. Given that there is a ramp and standard class, I would organize my board in a similar way. I would ensure students are able to see the standards and objectives they are focusing on for the unit.

Materials that are often used in the classroom are organized in bins. Students are allowed to retrieve what they need at any time during class. This helps student learning because no student is held back by lack of access to necessary materials. It helps with behavior management because students become responsible for taking care of these materials to continue to use them. I like this free access of materials because it both holds students accountable and provides them with what they may need. I would also like to use an organizer like this as it is easily accessible to students with disabilities.
