Jason M. Satterfield is a mentor I found in 2020 when I began my search for a career in psychology. Now taking an education-focused class, I am also seeing him as an education mentor. The first work I consumed from Satterfield was Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Techniques for Retraining Your Brain which I have listened through twice in audiobook form. He is not only inspiring to me but much of his work relates directly to my chosen path of Family and Human Development because he focuses on therapy and professing therapies.

My greatest strength, as I pursue psychology and education, is to recognize and appreciate the individuality of others. I find that the uniqueness of others is not a challenge but a fascinating and enjoyable part of life. When I consider any future career, especially one in human development, my greatest feature would be encouraging others to enhance their preexisting features that make them the most them they can be.

One of the ways I have always been kind to myself is meditating during calm times. Since I was little, I have developed a good sense for never feeling truly "bored." Even during times of sitting in waiting rooms, climbing many flights of stairs or going on a long car ride, I have always enjoyed the freedom of not needing full brain engagement in some instances.
The picture above relates to my attitude of enjoying the little things and meditating on them. One thought that I really enjoyed having when I was only five or six was that "STOP" signs are also "GO" signs, because literally no one stops at a "STOP" sign and forgets to go afterward. I enjoy the stopping and the going and I thank myself for these thoughts very often.

Charting my life has been a difficult habit for me to build, as I often forget to plan anything and enjoy spontaneity. For school, I started keeping all of my assignments in my Reminders app and incidentally applied this habit to everything in my life. I have trips planned, my family's doctors appointments, chores, school assignments, fitness goals, bills, budgeting and much more all planned out in the short term and the long term. The feeling of control that I receive from such planning is phenomenal and helps me succeed in adult life, especially as life seems to get ever more complicated.

I have pursued much of my life independent to expectations and taking some time between high school and college was one of the greatest ideas I had despite the criticism I got for it. I took initiative to develop further as a person, decide more confidently on a path in life and pursue a degree later in life on my own. I subsequently got scholarships, took out loans and despite life's challenges, pursued my degree with Arizona State University while taking care of my family, working full time and developing internally. Taking the opportunity to pursue a degree with ASU has been the greatest example of how I create and execute upon opportunity in my life. I think there are certainly other examples, but this path has been one I am quite proud of.

Alongside my Reminders app, I also have a shared calendar with my family and friends for everything we have to do in life. I told everyone it would be worth the time to input the initial plans into the shared calendar because once that initial effort is put in, we all will feel connected and less stressed during down time. Apps like Google Calendar, TickTick or Apple Calendar are excellent, twenty-first century ways to avoid stressing over the "minute details that are often a part of life."

I have always enjoyed change despite it being difficult sometimes. I have moved to many different cities, tried many new jobs and embraced change whenever possible. Making the change to using Apple products, and especially to work hard enough, save my money and purchase my Macbook Air has been a big change I recently made but a necessary one. If I am considering the cost of change versus that of the desire to change, then I think my decision to sacrifice so many extra hours of work for a laptop that benefits my school work and is a tool I use to keep track of my calendar and work/life balance, I think it was a change worth making (D'Souza, 2011).

D'Souza, Granville. EQ from the Inside out: Breakthrough Tools & Ideas for Living a Fulfilling Life.

While I wanted to come up with a more philosophical example for loss aversion, I find that I still struggle with motivating myself with loss aversion currently and in the most literal of examples. I have begun taking some of my money and investing it, and I often find the unfortunate truth that my brain is "...constructed to make [me] fight to avoid small losses..." (D'Souza, 2011) even if I am certain my investments would grow over longer periods of time.

D'Souza, Granville. EQ from the Inside out: Breakthrough Tools & Ideas for Living a Fulfilling Life.

It would not be appropriate to consider being an educator or a therapist an act of "play" but for me, this career path is filled with so much joy and hope that I think I understand the intent of this tip. Psychology and other aspects of life can benefit my life with money, stability, success and achievement but can also be sources of nourishment for the soul if carefully selected. I have not yet worked a job that feels more than just a job, but I understand the goal of getting there and I appreciate this assignments framework to consider how to achieve that goal.
