K-W-L Chart

K-W-L stands for "Know, Want, Learn". There are three boxes and the first one is "What i KNOW", the second is "What I WANT to know", and the third is "What I LEARNED." This is a chart that can be used before and after a lesson is taught. Before they would fill out the first two boxes. This gets the students to think about what they are going to be learning about and helps them think of the prior knowledge that they have. They would fill out the last box at the end of the lesson and that helps them recap on what they had learned.

Advantages: This is great for tying in the before and after parts to a lesson. It helps them with their prior knowledge and then it helps them recap what they know. It also helps tie in what they are wanting to learn and gets the students more engaged to want to learn something.
Disadvantages: This is a chart that the students are going to have for some time and it is something that might get lost in the process.

A Venn Diagram is a chart that has two circles that overlap just a bit. This chart is mainly used in comparing two things and seeing their differences and their likes if they have any.

Advantages: This is great for younger students and comparing something in a story for example. It helps them see the difference in two characters for example, and then they get to see how they are alike as well.

Disadvantages: This is easier for younger kids and it is to basic for older kids. Older grades might need to compare more things and this is better for younger kids to do so. It is very overused in many different subjects as well.

A Prediction Chart is a chart that has a side for "What I predict will happen" and a chart for "what actually happened". This chart makes the students think about what might happen and compare it to what actually happened in the story.

Advantages: This is great for comparing and constrasting a prediction to the actual outcome. It makes the students think about what might happen next and analyze what is going on throughout the story.

Disadvantages: This might make kids go off track. A lot of teachers use this in many different classes, so it might get overused and students might get bored of it.

A Concept Wheel is that has 6 different sections to fill out about a certain topic. The student would write the concept in the center and then fill in the information around it in the coordinating boxes. The other sections boxes headings are "summary, definition, important features, examples, relationship to other components and non-examples". This helps the student really think about what they are talking about and what they are learning about.

Advantages: This is great for students when they are analyzing a certain concept and they are needing to pick it apart. It helps make the students think about what they are talking about and really get to know it.

Disadvantages: This is great for older grades, but I think that it would be difficult for younger students to really grasp and get the concept.

A Sequence Chain is a chart that has different sections for a story. Those sections include Title, Author, Characters, Setting and 6 different events. This would be great to be used in a reading class where they are having to put events in chronological order.

Advantages: This can help students get to see the story written down in chronological order rather than just in their head. It also helps them pick the story apart and see all of its bits and pieces that make it a story. It helps the students see the story come together.

Disadvantages: This would be to advanced for some grades. It might be difficult for the students to come up with 6 different events in some stories as well.

A Double Entry Diary is a double sided chart and the two boxes are labeled as "Direct Quotation from the Text with Page Number" and "My Questions/Reactions/Predictions" This is for students to fill out when they are reading something and they might come along questions, and have reactions to certain things and want to make predictions about certain things.

Advantages: This is great for students to stop and think about things that they might be having some questions about. It also helps with seeing what their reactions to things are and what they might be predicting what will be happening throughout the book.

Disadvantages: This is once again, something that is more towards older grades. There are a lot of boxes that can be filled out and that might be to many boxes depending on the story and what is going on throughout the book.

A Story Map is a chart that has 6 different boxes to write in. Their headings are Title/Author, Problem, Characters, Settings, 3 Main Events and Resolution. This would be used in solving a problem in a story.

Advantages: This is great for picking apart a problem in a story and trying to come up with a resolution to a problem in a story. It helps the students pick apart a problem in a story and help come up with a solution.

Disadvantages: Once again it is for older grades and it would be harder for students to understand and get.

The 3-2-1 Strategy is a graph that has three different boxes that are labeled "Things I found out, Interesting or Unusual Things, Questions I still have." This would be good to use in to use for reading chapter books and to do every chapter and to compare them at the very end of the book.

Advantages: This would be great for older students in analyzing on what they had read and get to know what information that they are reading. It would be great for having kids find information throughout the story.

Disadvantages: This would be good for older students, once again, so it would not be good for younger grades. It might bring some of the students off track on what they need to really are needing to focus on.

Learning Logs is a chart that has child set up in their own way. It has different sections of "I have been learning about, Knowing about this topic helps me, This topic reminds me of, the part I know the most about is, The part that is the most confusing is, I would like to know more about." With these sections the child can place anywhere on their poster or page and it gives them some sort of creativity.

Advantages: This is great at really breaking down what the children are learning and reading. It helps them recognize what they do know compared to what they are wanting to know and are still confused about.

Disadvantages: This is very advanced. This would be mainly for older students. If it were done with younger students it would have to be mainly guided by the teacher and most likely be on an anchor chart.

A graphic organizer is a chart that has the topic in the middle. Around the middle students branch off and say different things or something that can relate to the topic. This can have certain subtopics off the main, or you can have it be something that is free handed and the students do as they please.

Advantages: This is great for coming up with different ideas or facts or something related to a topic. This is also more free to do what the students are wanting and easier for them.

Disadvantages: This is very overused. It is used in a lot of different subjects so the students could be bored with the chart.
