I believe that popular music concerts can definitely be a place where spiritual experiences take places for people. I think that it all has to do with what it means to the person. If I were to go to one of The Grateful Dead's concerts I don't think that it would spiritually awaken me any more than a Sacred Harp singing but that it mainly because I have never experienced either nor do I know what would really happen. I do believe that these people felt something and that they felt it was something religious or spiritual. The experience is dependent on so many different factors such as how the person feels, what the environments like, and what their emotional connection to the band is like. I have had both good and bad experiences at concerts. The worst one I had was something that I just couldn't handle and ending up enjoying about 5 minutes of it in total. That experience definitely made me rethink certain aspects of my life and even who I was even though it was just one concert. Another concert that I went to was one where the band interacted a lot with the audience and since it was a relatively small crowd, the energy was pretty great. This concert didn't necessarily give me a spiritual experience but it did give me a bit of a different outlook on life which is what some of the followers of The Grateful Dead had said. All the energy that you give off and get from a concert makes your adrenaline rise and it is very possible to come out of there a different person.

Mosh Pit

My worst concert didn't involve "moshing" like this video does but there were so many people in the crowd and I guess that I couldn't handle it. I think an experience like this really changes you if you're susceptible enough to the emotion it can cause. In the video, you can obviously see people in the crowd who were expecting this, who know what to do and are ready to go for it but within those people are some who are going for it for the first time. They've heard what it was like and wanted to experience it themselves and may become regulars at mosh pits. Then there are those who stayed back and didn't take part for whatever reason and maybe it's because they've done it before and hate it or have never done it and already know they would hate it but are still there to experience the concert. My point is that there are so many different kinds of people. This has the possibility of changing one person's life while not even affecting another's life in the slightest.

I realize that I pretty much always bring up One Direction but they give me some really good examples. This video was One Direction performing in San Siro where the fans decided to bring flags and create a beautiful setting. I wish I was there to experience this moment because it is simply beautiful. The fans spelled out, "We Are 1D Family" which I believe was related to the name of their tour that year, "Where We Are" but the idea is that the fandom is seen as a family much like what Deadheads considered their fanbase. The main difference is that people who follow the band do it on social media not on the road because that would be extremely uneconomical these days. I can definitely see how fans, and even the band members, could leave this concert feeling like they'd just had a spiritual experience. Thousands of people just connected with each other and made something that even makes me emotional. In Robin Sylvan's text, a Deadhead said, "It's a big together thing, and that's really neat" which is probably the simplest way to say that it feels like a family.

SXSW is a music festival that began in 1987. I have never been but I have lived in Austin my whole life and have seen the crowds and the number of people that it brings to Austin. People go there to listen to different types of artists who affect them differently. This is a good example of how everyone can have a similar experience at the same time but it could just be with different artists and with different kinds of people around them since so many concerts go on at once.
