In the Disney series The Owl House, Amity Blight strives to be nothing like her toxic mother Odalia, but inevitably shows similar flaws to her mother. Odalia is a narcissistic and controlling businesswoman who is willing to do anything for business, even following by a family motto, “a Blight always upholds their end of the deal.” Amity shows very similar traits through her desire for perfection, expressing self-loathing when she loses her “top student” pin to Willow; she also feels the need to control, often bossing around her friend group. Despite Amity’s eventual development, she originally ends up acting very similarly to the abusive Odalia. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, An-mei and Rose act as parallels for each other, showing how the flaws An-mei had wished to throw away ended up being passed down to Rose.

In the popular 1997 movie Titanic, protagonist Jack Dawson meets and falls in love with Rose DeWitt Bukater on the Titanic ship. The first time Jack sees Rose on the top deck, he instantly falls in love with her, and they soon meet and get to know one another. Jack acts in an impulsive manner, which eventually leads to his death, because he decides to risk his life out of his uncontrollable love for Rose. Much like in The Joy Luck Club, the characters show great sacrifices, similar to how Jack sacrificed his life for Rose. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, Suyan, An-mei, and Ying Ying all show that people sacrifice for the hope of a better life and future.

Everyone experiences their trauma differently. It can have a wildly different effect on different people even if they go through the same trauma. This is shown in the 2013 film Frozen when the two sisters lose their parents. It leads Anna to try to be closer with her sister and Elsa to shut herself away. Trauma can make some people stronger and tear others down. Sometimes it fades with time and sometimes it stays with you for the rest of your life In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the trauma of having no choice makes Suyuan guilty that she left her babies and she overcompensates in her relationship with June, But it can also have more positive effects such as teaching An-mei and Lindo to take control of their lives.

Because she loved her so much, Liesel’s mother found somewhere for her to go and took her there. Even though she would never see her last living child again, she knew that it was the only way to promise Liesel’s safety during the war. Living out of homeless shelters and train stations, Gardner faces arguably the greatest trauma any parent can face; knowing that he cannot properly care for his son. Yet, although he has seemingly lost everything, trauma’s effects cause Gardner to keep working and he receives a job position that can support him and his son. The effects of trauma that Gardner faces are similar to Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club that teaches readers that sometimes trauma leads to a loss of faith and guilt, but other times can lead to strong determination.

In the novel The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, the character Nie Huisang exemplifies severe anxiety in decision making after the death of his older brother. Huisang is required to take over his brother’s position of sect leader after watching him be killed, and goes on to worry constantly about ending up in the same position as well as disappointing his soldiers and the cultivation world. Huisang also loses his free, rambunctious spirit after this traumatic event, and becomes a weak winded, anxious man. This loss of spirit and anxiety in making every day choices are also shown heavily through many characters in The Joy Luck Club after they experience their trauma.

In the outstanding film Moana, the main character, Moana, longs to become an adventurous explorer and travel beyond her small-minded village while also living up to the harsh expectations of her family. However, when she receives a surprising visit from Maui, a demi-god, he takes her on a remarkable adventure that enables Moana to find her real identity and purpose. Similarly, the heart-wrenching novel, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, shows the reader that surprising events and encounters allow individuality and identity to arise.

In the Disney film The Princess and the Frog, Tiana is stuck at a job she hates, trying to make enough money to start her own restaurant. When a Prince, who is stuck in frog form, offers to give her money in exchange for a kiss, she takes the opportunity. Tiana changed her fate similarly to how many characters in The Joy Luck Club changed their fate. In this novel by Amy Tan, the ending of An Mei' s childhood, Lindo's first marriage, and Ying Ying's life in China shows that you can change your fate .
