I learned that whilst the United States constitution allows free speech and the practicing of religion (or non religion) it does not give respect/promote any religion. I believe this is to keep the idea of freedom present even in the world of religious beliefs. A similar idea could be applied to book banning. Books could be published under free speech but schools could choose not to use them as materials for class.

It gives me multiple perspectives and makes me think about what i would do in their place. I can apply this to making my argument towards the topic.

(Survey cited by the pew research for center for the people & the press)

I was surprised to learn that the idea of banning books has been steadily decreasing for decades. This is interesting because with how social media and pop culture is now a days, it appears as if banning books is a growing issue when in reality it’s been a diminishing one. This helps guide my thoughts on the prompt because it allows me to recognize that this isn’t a growing trend which is important to realize. It also helped me realize the division in political parties as far as banning books go, this will allow me to research the topic more in depth on specific corners and sides of the political compass.

This will give my synthesis paper a more well rounded amount of organized info because it focuses on not just the issue itself but on who specifically is perpetuating the issue.

Something I learned from this section of the synthesis module is methods of summarizing a lot of data without having the page simply be crowded with numbers and charts. This section has a good balance of empirical data info, as well as explaining this data without going too in depth.

I’ve also learned that shifting most of your empirical data to one section can help you focus on explaining other aspects of the topic more effectively in the other parts of your text.

From this I’ve learned that when I write my own synthesis paper, that I have to be very particular about how I present my data to ensure the reader understands. I also have to be sure to prevent any accidental misrepresentation of information.

I learned that while young students shouldn't read books consisting violence or sex, banning books like "slaughterhouse" should not be the best decision. In my opinion I feel like it's up to the teachers to choose appropriate curricular material or a matter of putting restriction to books. Its important to educate students according to their age and not just ban books.

Why are these books banned? what is their reasons for banning certain books. Example, "Of mice and Men" reading this book and learning the time and place this book takes place in you learn a different perspective on how life in that era was for certain people especially for people of color. So what is banning this book accomplishing? What is it about this book that they don't want people knowing?

I learned that historical writings can be deemed inappropriate for people as old as 18 due to it's vulgarity, even if it's vulgarity is accurate. History realistically is very graphic, but this graphic side is something that must be learned and not ignored. Society has chosen to hide these types of things from children, thus hiding them from the very real things that happen in the world. It's important to show both sides of history (and anything in general), the good and the bad.

(Hopkins, 2010) I learned that banning books censors a writer and takes away their freedom of speech. "Manifesto" is a poem written by Ellen Hopkins whose book was banned for detailing drug use. And in the poem, you can feel her rage. I think that books should not be banned in a school setting because there isn't anything that students aren't able to access through the internet/their phones. Although it might be a controversial idea, I would rather see other methods implemented when protecting children's innocence.
