Molotov is an alternative Mexican rock band that was formed in 1995 in Mexico city. The members are Tito Fuetntes (vocals and guitarist), Miky Huidobro (bass and vocals), Paco Ayala (bass and vocals), and Randy Ebright (drums and vocals). Starting off, the band would perform in many underground places in Mexcio City and started to form little fan groups. They then became more known when they opened for Heroes del Silencio in Monterrey and then the band La Lupita in Puebla. This led them to be offered a deal by Unviersal Music Latin Entertainment. Since then The band has created many different albums and songs that discuss current political and social issues. Their music has become more popular in Mexico as it expresses their frustration for certain politcal policies that many people may not acknowledge enough.

This song and band not only challenge the political and social issues, but also the music industry with their harsh lyrics and imagery. This makes their statements even more prominent to the listener. When the song first played on MTV en Espanol, the Spanish curse words were censored; however, the english words were still allowed to be aired. The band mates argued, “they’re not just cutting out the words, they’re also obscuring the message”. We can also see censorship in the music videoing with the bleeping of certain curse words, which are not censored when played on different music apps. Many of Molotov’s albums were banned from Mexican record stores due to their explicit imagery. This expresses the idea of activism because it is meant to anger people as well as examine the issues that are being shown. It provides awareness and causes people to protest against those issues as they feel seen through the lyrics.

Adorno argues that popular culture “ robs us of our freedom twice – both aesthetically (in failing to give aesthetic freedom in enjoying art) and morally (in blocking the path to true social freedom)”. Adorno’s idea of freedom in culture is to be sought through experience and examination of the art as a whole, both visually and meaningfully.

Adorno also discusses the idea of “guilty pleasures”, specifically in the music industry. He states,

Music has been a way for people to express their emotions and personality which have led to the creation of societal groups for the people that listen to certain genres of music like; metal heads, emos, and even teeny boppers. When people first learn about the type of music someone else may listen to, it already creates a certain idea of who that person may be. This is due to the semiotics in the songs and different genres of music and what they represent. Thomas Frank states that “the establishment demands homogeneity; we revolt by embracing diverse, individual lifestyles “(164). Through music, people can connect to the lyrics, images in the music videos, and the people that listen to the similar genres. It can also be a form of activism and provide awareness of what is happening in society. In this essay, I will be focusing on the Semantics in the song called, "Frijolero" by Molotov as it demonstrates the racial struggles that Mexican immigrants face in America.

At the beginning of the song, it discusses the racial stereotypes that Mexican immigrants face in America. Those stereotypes being criminals and drug deals. This can be see in the lyrics:

“Even if we're made famous

for being distributors

of the drugs we grow,

you are the consumers.”

As of 2024, America’s drug use has been significantly higher than Mexico’s consumption.

These lyrics criticize those stereotypes by stating that although people may call Mexicans criminals due to the production of drug products, America has been the consumers of those drugs which would also consider them criminals.

The purpose of the point of view is for the listener to understand the struggles that immigrants face in America and when crossing the border to come to this country. The hope of starting from zero and experiencing a better life; however, the fear of crossing the border and being killed by doing so.

These lyrics represent how the American government gains their money from the help of other countries. It creates a sense of frustration as the American government has provided policies that discriminate towards Mexican immigrants while some policies from Mexico and other countries help benefit America.

Throughout the song the singers switch between speaking Spanish to English, which demonstrates the dialogue between a Mexican immigrant and an American border patrol officer. This dialogue is an example of the mistreatment Mexican Immigrants receive with the repetitive use of the “B” slur and phrase, “stay on your side of the goddamn river”. As for the Spanish dialogue, it conveys the anger Immigrants have towards these comments as they are racist and hurtful.
