There are several organizations that aid these communities where they are most needed. Médicines Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is an organization based in Paris and founded in 1971. They make sure that good doctors are brought with their medical knowledge and are granted medical supplies to distribute to communities. They operate in over 70 countries from El Salvador to the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea. Another such organization is Mercy Ships. Mercy ships travels along the coast of poor countries in Africa. They conduct surgeries and provide supplies to those communities for free. We often have to lead separate lives at home vs. at school or in other public places because we are afraid of what the consequences will be in terms of personal safety or relationships with our family or friends. It is draining to always be on guard and have to pay such attention to the things we say around certain people. I wish that more people understood the basic concepts of sexuality and gender, because I think simple ignorance is one of the main reasons we face backlash for our identities. Following the War on Terror and the Patriot Act, the FBI and Police departments have turned their eyes to Muslims and began a project of religious persecution. Instead of targeting Black Civil rights leaders, we now target Muslims. Things like growing out a beard or attending service can get Muslims placed on a watchlist and subject them to immoral salience and securitization. COINTEL-PRO still exists its just who it targets that has changed.
