TTS, this reminds me of the inquiry unit, when we learnt about a few trees and how the aboriginal used them. Similarly, both are related to aboriginals and how well they use the environment (they used pretty much everything they take). But unlike the old inquiry unit, the book was about respecting the aboriginals and changing national things to show who was the rightful owner of the land, while the inquiry unit mostly focused on how they used stuff. TTT, this relates to why Anisa was troubled in the book Anisa’s Alphabet. Similarly, both groups had to deal with a war, and both groups were really scared and couldn’t do anything about it. But unlike Anisa’s Alphabet, only the kids left the land, and they were forced to, while in Anisa’s Alphabet, the whole family left the town, intentionally, for their own safety. TTW, this relates to a lot more countries with problems like this (people were in this land before and didn’t want to give it up / didn’t realise the group they were with was against them and support them, and when they finally realised it was too late). For instance, in New Zealand, religious people were already in the area and when powerful people from other countries came here, they attacked and fought back, trying to protect their land.

Common Wealth

Text to self: This text is quite different from my life because I am not aboriginal or Torres Strait islander and was not part of the generation of people that suffered everyday after caption cook arrived and almost got wiped out completely as a generation. They were greatly threatened to go extinct when caption cook arrived in 1788 84% of aboriginal people died many of the aboriginal languages are critically endangered.

Text to text: The text is simlair to anisa’s alphabet because the people both in the book wanted freedom and regained hope at there darkest times and both talked about being treated horribly and sometimes had no hope in the story and they both talked about facing Danger and they wanted there troubles to resolve from different problems which where war and equality they both hoped for something to happen.

Text to world: this text reminded me of convicts and how badly they were treated too and how they were made into slaves and weren’t treated like humans and there living and sleeping conditions were so bad that they mostly got sick and worked until they died and the person who bought the slaves Had no sympathy for their death and there family’s grieved because of there death and then there other family became slaves aswell.

Common wealth

T-T-T:

Both text talk about the issue of indigenous treated poorly. In day break it tells about a girl and how her nan is going back to country. Day break also says how indigenous were here first, the British stole their babies, the British building statues everywhere and none of them were an indigenous and much more dreadful stuff the British empire did. In common wealth it talks about the changes that needs to be done to fix what the British empire has done.

T-T-S:

In this text it reminded me of a time when I was walking to game stop to buy my Nintendo, I was half way there when I saw two homeless people about 10 metres away from each other, a kid and a fully grown man. The kid had loads of money in his hat while the man had only $5 to $10 in his hat. The book is related with each other because they both say how some people are untreated in this world. The book says they are treated differently because of their skin colour unlike how younger people get more love while grown ups are assumed to be extremely rich people and working 24/7 with no sleep and no food.

T-T-W:

The book reminds me of the police because the English killed the black for no reason just like some police. If a black person stole something from the police or the English empire they would decapitate them and if the black even looked at the English or the police they would terminate them. The book reminds me of that because it says how the english empire stole everything from the indigenous and if the indigenous tried to get it back, well see you in the after life.

Text-to-text

Common wealth is about Australian aboriginals being invaded and wanting to be the same. which is similar to anisa’s alphabet in the way that anisa was invaded and had guns waving around like they were nothing. Unlike anisa’s alphabet the aboriginals got to stay in there country of home. Both of these story’s were made to give a moral / to give a life lesson. Something none these books had were bright and happy, heart warming story’s.

Text-to-self

A connection I had with this story is that I believe that all innocent people should be treated the same, because being punished is not healthy and being punished for something not bad is supposed to get you out of that good behaviour. Something I have in common with the story is that nothing works unless we work together for example cleaning a house nothing gets done properly unless teamwork is used to get it done. Something I think is false about the book is that everyone isn’t the same because everyone unique in there own way.

Text-to-world

My text to world connections is Common wealth (the book) is all real and factual nothing from it isn’t true except what the author wants to happen. The common wealth is supposed to mean we are all the same but aboriginals ar still not the same. In this story it shows that British invaded Australia 🇦🇺 but the British didn’t only invaded they invaded 10s of country’s. The story mentions a bird which I think could refer to the famous Aboriginal go Bunjil.

Text to self: When he said we should all be equal I immediately thought about when I told my parents I was non-binary, I used that argument over and over again, saying that if they don’t use my proper pronouns that we can’t be equal in the house, in the neighbourhood or in the world. I know that many of my friends who are out are going threw the same thing, wether it is with strangers or there own parents. Diving in closer, I thought about the Black Lives Matter movements ✊🏿 , how they weren’t treated equally in spaces that clame to be safe or that it is a nightmare to go somewhere or that the must have the constant fear of being harmed, it took them a long time and we still have so much to go, but we will get there soon I hope.

Text to world: When he talked about breaking down the barriers we have on society my mind transferred to the wall trump was trying to build, hoisting himself up on the same barriers that they talk about in this book. Building the bridge to seperate American culture from Mexican culture, they are different in the same ways, building a pedestal up on these differences are not a thing to celebrate and just contribute to more hate and harm placing itself into the future. Culture is never ending but can change and discrepancies will not change that.

Text to text: This book is similar to anisa’s alphabet because I imagine that anisa’s war is based on a problem between two countries and there differences, similarly the book is based on people stacking up blocks of differences and hate to form walls of ignorance and can cause a war. In both books people had to leave the people they loved and there homes, unlike each other , some people where forced and others left because it was too unsafe, like stepping on a field of bombs.

Text-to-Self:

The book reminds me of art because once when I was doing art at this school, we were supposed to make Aboriginal inspired art work with oil pastels and paint. We first used brown and black paint to make the background. Then, we used dark blue and painted white dots to complete the artwork. The two are similar because the book’s perspective is from an Aboriginal’s perspective and the art that we were doing was also Aboriginal inspired. The two were different though, because the book is is poem calling for action while the artwork we did in art is, well basically art.

Text-to-Text:

The text Common Wealth and the text Anisa’s Alphabet are similar because in Common Wealth, the main character (whose name is not mentioned) talks about the history of Australia and the Aborigines, which after 5 000 years, isn’t that good. Also in Common Wealth, the author is calling for a change and is not happy with the way things are now. Similarly, in Anisa’s Alphabet, Anisa isn’t charmed with what is happening and Anisa also demands a change. Unlike Anisa’s Alphabet though, the main character is Aboriginal and Anisa doesn’t appear to be.

Text-to-World:

In Common Wealth, the story mentions how Captain Cook came to Australia and claimed he discovered it (which is wrong). A lot of sad events happen after Captain Cook comes to Australia which are mentioned in the book. Similarly, all these events happened in real life, which is also very upsetting.

Anthony cool boi Text to text This book is like anisas alphabet cause they are both sad and about people getting kicked out their home for doing basically nothing. The books are also both trying to convince the reader that fighting and war is wrong. But unlike anisas alphabet this book is a rhyme and instead of telling a story about a character common wealth is about everyone in Australia not just one character.Text to world, this book is about Australia and Australia is in the world so it’s really easy to make a ttw. This reminds me of ww2 just like anisas alphabet, in ww2 Jews were treated VERY badly by hitler the Jews couldn’t even walk on the streets. And when they tried to speak back at the nazis they were sent to concentration camps, the woman, children and disabled were put in gas chambers, and killed the men and fit people were forced to work. This is a lot like Australia. when Australia was ‘found’ by captain cook he call it ‘no mans land’ but there were people and when the British found them the kidnapped the children, shot their parents and sent them to camps where they would work. Unlike the concentration camps in Germany, Australia’s camps were a bit less cruel. I’m not saying the camps in Australia weren’t cruel I’m just saying they aren’t as cruel.Text to self This reminds me a lot of the inquiry unit and how it was focused on the aboriginals and NOT ABOUT the British who ‘discovered’ Australia.Unlike the inquiry unit this book is about how Australia should be changed and how Australia needs a rework. Another thing that sets this book aside from our inquiry unit is that this book strives for a change.

Text to Text: I can connect this text to another text called Anisa’s Alphabet. I can connect the two texts because both have a page about people invading their land and their homes. In Anisa’s Alphabet, the book is about people invading and starting a war and Anisa ends up going to a refugee camp. This is similar to this story as the character is an aboriginal and Captain Cook invaded their ancestors land and in the texts both of the characters did not want it to happen. I’ve noticed that In both texts after the people invaded, everything changed. For example, in Anisa’s Alphabet, after the war started they had to move to a refugee camp far away from their homes and in this story Common Wealth, after Captain Cook arrived, Europeans started to invade and aboriginals were locked up.

Text to Self: When I read this book, I can link it to my life because in school we learn about aboriginals and Australia’s history. When I read this book it reminded me of everything I learnt about and also how we sing the national anthem in assembly. It reminded me of that because the purpose is to persuade the government to change the national anthems lyrics because some aboriginals find it offensive as the lyrics were ‘we are young and free’ but the aboriginal culture is one of the oldest cultures.

Text to World: The book can relate to the real world as all the facts were true and every single fact in the book happened in real life. In this text Common Wealth, the character feels strongly about changing the national anthem and in real life and it happened the anthem changed from ‘young and free’ to ‘one and free.’

Common WealthT-T-WThe book reminded me of how lots of people worked together in the COVID lockdown, like the person in the book was asking people to. In the COVID lockdown, many people volunteered to deliver food and supplies and even just posting something nice on social media or putting a sign on a window helped everyone. Whereas the fight for justice for aboriginal rights is very different, everyone can still do something and it shows that if people unite in hard times, we can all pull through and learn a lesson on the way. Though the two circumstances are very different they still have the same core message.T-T-TThe books Common Wealth and Daybreak are similar because, despite their different story lines, both discuss aboriginal connection to Country and how important the land is to them, even though Europeans have treated them very badly. They both have similar ideas and messages, though they have very different writing styles. The books both show that even though aboriginal people have been treated very badly in the past they are still fighting for their rights and justice.T-T-SThe hope that is in the book reminded me of my hope in the lockdown and how everyone shares hope throughout the world. Lots of people were struggling in the book , like in the lockdown, but we all worked together and made it through. It is similar in the book, with the plea to work together and support each other, even though there was a full on pandemic and it was very hard for everyone.

Common wealth 🖤👨🏿‍🦳

18.5.2021

T-T-T📖💙

In this book they must have felt lots of fear just like Anisa. But unlike Anisa's alphabet, the people in this book were scared because they were being hurt although Anisa was scared that they would hurt her. I don't think Anisa was aboriginal she was just under attack which common wealth also experienced. But being attacked as a aboriginal is more different then being a refugee like Anisa. Aboriginal were being hurt one by one in common wealth where as the whole country was under attack in Anisa's alphabet. Both if these books included danger, tears and pain.

T-T-S👱🏻‍♀️💕

I have not been in pain and despair unlike this book, common wealth. A troubled aboriginal writing this book or telling the story probably had the opposite life to mine. Maybe a few times I had a lot of hope but not for my life! Never have I ever been starved or threatened of my life unlike these poor very important people! They were in charge of this beautiful land and all I’m in charge of is my books and my toys. Tears have found a way to stream down my face except not because of being beaten up.

T-T-W 🌍💚

The fact that this has been caused in history before is traumatising. This would be caused very often everyday and aboriginal were starved to death.I’m talking about the mental and physical torture. They were in charge of the land which was a hard task and paid with this horrid results. Oils and pollution just like every other country in the world. If the aboriginals never had their land invaded they would live the dream and this nightmare wouldn’t have happened. Yes, it is all true.

TTS: It is hard for me to relate to this, like many people I am not aboriginal. Something I can connect to though is the national anthem. When I sing it I am constantly confused by the lyrics, do we really need lines like: ‘girt by sea?’ Why can’t we include the aboriginal people? After all, they are the true owners of this land.

TTT: Like Anisa in her Anisa’s Alphabet, the aboriginal people are going through a very tough time, they are being mistreated, and they want it to stop. But, unlike Anisa, aboriginals can’t escape from this. Except we can all stop both of these things, we can help other countries make peace with their enemy’s, and we can slowly but surely stop the fight between black and white.

TTW: This is a big one, it has a lot of meaning for so many people. For ttw I connected to the Black Lives Matter movement, it is meaningful to so many people and I’m sure it will show up in more than one connection. Another link is the First Fleet, personally I think they should’ve just sailed on by, away from Australia and the Aboriginal people. Because they came, many lives and languages were lost.

Of course they try not to realise it and continue being hopeful. Racism is all around the world and it is not the good kind. People are forced to do things that they wouldn’t rather do, they would be controlled by rules and laws. The government have toned down the control over they’re lives but it hasn’t ended quite just yet. Very similar to the aboriginal racism, but it is all quite the same.

T-T-T: the book reminds me of ‘Day Break’ because of the topic they both share. They are both about aboriginal and tress strait islander people racism or better then that black racism. In one of the pages in ‘Day Break’ it shows the girls teacher saying “Captain Kook discovered Australia “ while the girl was confused because her father says “we had the land first” and with this information we know that the girl is Aboriginal/Torres strait islander. In Commonwealth it was a poem about a refugee girl that ran away from her refugee camp. It had deep emotion in it and had descriptive sentences and illustrations to make the reader feel something.

T-T-W: it reminded me of protests and people grasping for change.
Deep connections - common wealth

T - T - S : The bit when they say that this should be a shared land made me ashamed. Ashamed to be one of the thousands of people who stole this land from it’s rightful owners. I feel like a bystander. I feel like a bad person. I definitely feel like someone in a unfair community. They are willing to share. We are not. We are to selfish and hold to much self esteem to share. What’s worse we are happier with the idea of claiming stolen land than we are with the thought of sharing

T - T - T : The book “common wealth” reminds me of another book about a ingenious Australian and in the book the author describes how she spends her day off (aka. Her Australia Day) not messing around of having fun, she gets into the car and drives out to the country. She reunites her and her family to the land. To the land that will always be theirs. We need to change things in Australia.

T - T - W : What this book reminds me of is how much effect a action can change the future. Like in this case is we stole this land and now Australia is one of the biggest climate change hot spot. The aboriginal Australians were so ethical in how much resources they took from the land. If they needed food they would kill 2 kangaroos and somehow feed a whole village! They also made sure to use every single piece of said kangaroo to make sure they weren’t wasting anything.

It reminded me of the inquiry unit we did in term one which looked at the arrival of European settlers from the perspective of Indigenous Australians. Reading those words made me feel proud that at NMPS we recognise and acknowledge the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Eastern Kulin Nation, as the traditional owners of the land.

Text to Text
The phrase ‘but what would really be great, is if we could change the date’ in Common Wealth made me think about the book Day Break. I made a text-to-text connection to the phrase, “this isn’t a celebration” in reference to Australia Day. I can infer that the authors of Common Wealth and Day Break both believe the date of Australia Day should be moved to allow for “a true common wealth vision”.

Text to World
I made a text to world connection after reading the phrase, “a bird can’t fly with just one feather; they need to work together.” It made me think about Victoria and how we, as a state, have worked together during the covid-19 pandemic. At the moment, we are all staying home to make our community safe, just like we did last year.

This book, on the other hand, didn’t.

Text to Self
In this book, it shows a sunset on one of the pages. This reminded me of the term 1 holidays.

T-T-T
The book day break is similar to this book Common wealth. The similarities are that they both have scenes that have shown baby being stolen. In both texts it reference to Captain Cook. The both reference to indigenous people throwing spears. They talk about in both books about their ancestors.
T-T-S
This book reminds me of all the times when I went Queensland. In Queensland there are more indigenous Australians then Melbourne. It is Likely because Queensland is closer to the bush and closer to country. It sad to think that we have destroyed The country we stand on to this day. But it can be reversible.
T-T-W
I have see, read and Heard that school are teaching kids the Real history of Australia. That indigenous Australians were here before Captain Cook and that The Europeans treated Indigenous Australians terribly. It is good that the truth of Australian history is coming to school. When more people learn about Australians history they will understand how to treat people. With people treating everyone the same it Will be easier to make the World better.

Callan

The book “Common Wealth” reminds me of the day a black man named George Floyd died. I’m reminded of this because reading the book made me think about racism and not just in Australia, everywhere. One of the pictures also remind me of learning history at school. When I first found out how horrible the past was, I was shocked and then remembered the Black Lives Matter marches. In the book it also mentioned how the national anthem has to change the part where it says “We are young and free” and later, it was eventually changed which made me happy.

This book reminds me of when I went to the Gold Coast and saw lots of old paintings from indigenous Australian culture. I’m reminded of the book because of all the pictures in the book. When I was there, the paintings we saw were unique, each in their own way. Thinking back to it, it was probably the best experience I’ve ever had in Australia. The book had a good meaning and made me wish I could change history, but that’s too bad.

The book also reminds me of another book titled “When we say Black Lives Matter.” They both have strong meanings and both of which are good. I haven’t read a lot of books about indigenous Australians but I still understand most of what happened to them. There was a picture in Common wealth of black footprints and white footprints, it reminded me of a picture in When we say Black Lives Matter of a woman holding her child, trying to keep them safe. I’m reminded of it because the footprints cross paths which make me think of captain cook stealing children by going into the huts indigenous Australians made.

Josh H

I made a text to self connection
“ Experts estimate only 80 Sumatran rhinos remain”
Mum and dad went to Namibia and they saw the rhinos which are also endangered. There are only 200 rhinos left in Namibia.

I made a text to world connection when I read
“ Poaching and habitat destruction by humans have devastated its population, with its numbers falling by about 70 per cent in just two decades.” Rhinos are being targeted by poachers with tranquilliser guns. They tranquilliser the Rhino and cut the horn off while the Rhino is asleep. When the rhino wakes up it bleeds to death and dies.

I made a text to text connection when I read,
“ It’s important to remember that the Sumatran rhino is still on the verge of extinction ”.When I read Animal News, it talked about Poachers are cutting off Rhino horns and taking their horns to sell for $35,000 per kilogram. It is disgusting to hear, that there have been 341 Rhinos poached this year in South Africa.

In term 1, when we did the inquiry unit of Captain Cook took over the aboriginals’ lands, John gave us a chance to talk to Captain Cook (which is performed by John). And I understood how and why the aboriginals feel. And this book gave me a better understanding of it.

Text-to-world
This book reminds me of racism. Each time I read a book about racism, I felt sad. And I still wonder why some people still believe in racism. This book is a type of racism. And I was really moved by it.

Text-to-text
This book is really similar to the other books I read. They are all about racism. And they are all about bullying. But I enjoyed and was moved by this book the most. One of the other ones “Day Break”, I enjoyed that one as well.

Text to self
This book reminded me of the indigenous people. Because on some of the pages shows indigenous people. Not just the indigenous it also had the anzacs. It made me feel like indigenous people should get more respect because some people just don’t know anything. The book is talking about being fair and I agree because some people get treated differently in a bad way because of their skin colour.
Text to text
This book reminded me of the book day break. Because both books included something to do with aboriginals. Both books are showing that some people believe that captain cook discovered Australia. The book also reminded of the book Anisas alphabet. Both books are poetry and bad things happening.
Text to world
This book reminded me of how unfair the world is. People get treated differently because of skin colour. Black people get accused for crimes more than white people do. This means even police officers treat black people worse than white people. I think that the world should accept black people and not mistreat them.

Roisin

Text to self: This book reminds me of my year three genius hour activity. This is because in genius I did an aboriginal styled painting. This relates to the book because the art in the book is clearly aboriginal styled. I found that in the book the art was quite moving, as it was showing a very strong opinion.

Text to text: This book reminds me of the Black Lives Matter book, because they are both strongly showing that the characters (or narrator, in this case) deserved more. The characters believed they should be given and showing more rights, freedoms and that they should just be generally respected more. I can tell that tall these characters just want some change in the way people think and treat them.

Text to world: In this book, the narrator / character clearly wants the national anthem to be altered or changed. I can relate to this because in real life the national anthem was changed slightly to incorporate and respect the traditional owners of the land (the aboriginals). It changed from saying we are young and free, to we are one and free. The reason we are young and free is disrespectful to some people is because the traditional owners of this land have been here for many thousands of years, so they are definitely not young!!

T-T-T
This text reminded me of "Day break" because they were both about Indengnous Australians. Although "Common Wealth" was different to "Day Break" in the way that it was more of a poem. This text also reminded me of "When we say black lives matter" because it was written in the way of a poem. Also both are different in some ways and the same in others, this makes them very interesting to read!!

T-T-W
This text was about Indegienious Australians, that reminded of the real world. Everyday Indeginous Australians are judged for what they look like. That brought me to... People Are Judged For Looks And Cutltures. Everyday this horrid thing happens around the world. Making people uncomfortable with who they are isn't okay.

T-T-S
This text reminded me of when I wrote a first- person story about nature. This isn't veryyy similar but it can be hard to relate to texts sometimes. The poem basically was talking about you walking through a garden. This garden wasn't normal it was ✨special ✨ it had mythical beings and glowing trees.

Done :)

Text to self: it makes me feel sad that people don’t care about Australian history. I think we should change the national anthem, I know we did one word already but we can do way more. And I saw their flag, it’s nice.

Text to text: I have read heaps of books about indigenous Australians but none about the anthem. I think it's very creative how this persuasive piece is also rhyming at the same time.

Text to world: I think and feel like the world should do more about respecting and honouring everyone's culture and where they come from because every country is very unique in its way.

Text-to-Text
This book really reminds me of the movie A Silent Voice because of the sentence '200 years of ears that year but don't listen'. A Silent Voice is about a deaf girl who gets bullied by a group of students when she goes to school, and when the bully grows up he says that "she was the one who was deaf but I was the one that didn't listen".

Text-to-Self
Common Wealth makes me think of the time we learnt about how Captain Cook came and "discovered" Australia, when the truth is the Indigenous people were there before him. The book mentions this too.

Text-to-World
My answer for this connection is similar to the Text-to-Self connection, but Common Wealth reminds me of how the European settlers invaded Australia and did terrible things to the Indigenous people such as killing them and taking their children away. I'm glad that most people treat the Indigenous kindly now.

Text to world

A lot of Torres Strait islanders are still fighting for their land and in the world people disrespect them for their culture, their own way of life and especially for their skin tone. Especially the part in the book where it was talking about that we are all the same inside, it relates straight to the skin tone. Because what it really means is that we have different skin tones and all but still we are all the same. So Torres Strait islanders should be treated with basic respect.

Text to text

From a video/ book it was about an explorer who went to see the Torres strait islanders. He made a diary and noted down what happened every step of the way. They treated him like a normal person not putting you straight to prison. Well anyway the man actually wrote that he liked their style of living peacefully and wrote it in his diary. After he came back to America he was going to publish the story, but told the editors to leave out the part where he had said that he liked their style of living. It is related to this book because in this book it said that we are all the same. And in the video they were the same as well they both treated each other with respect.

Text to self

The book kinda relates to me and everybody else, because I may look different and do things differently. Other people look differently and do things their way. And in NMPS, there are people from China who can’t speak English well, Indian, Germany and many many more. And everybody treats each other with respect. They don’t make fun of their looks and how they do things, everyone has the same status level. (It means that slaves work for the owner and blah blah blah)
