Paper Clickers and Zoom

Jenny Holte, Adjunct Faculty, School of Engineering
I love using paper clickers with my in-person students and needed a way to extend that to students joining remotely. I made all my course meetings a recurring Zoom meeting, and created polls which I attached to the meeting. One of the polls matches my paper clickers.

With papers clickers I can ask the students something like “Is the torque A, Clockwise or B Counterclockwise“. Students show me their response by holding the paper clicker in front of their chest. (No one else sees their response. Everyone has to answer.). Remote students can use the poll. I do not project the poll to the in-person students. That way no one is swayed to pick the most popular answer.

I love paper clickers because they allow responses to be hidden from classmates, but known to me, so I can get a sense of which students are struggling and might need encouragement. If incorrect answers are scattered around the room, I can say turn to your partner and discuss. If incorrect answers are all on one side of the room, I know that will be less effective, so I’ll call on a student instead.

I get less of this personalized information from the remote students, but the students alternate days in the classroom.

I will see if I can attach the files for the clickers and polls in the comments.
