In the United States, wearing or creating ugly Christmas sweaters is a popular tradition to embrace the holiday spirit. People enjoy activities like baking cookies, singing festive songs called 'Christmas carols", hanging Christmas stockings, or decorating their trees with ornaments such as tinsels and baubles.

The trend of ugly sweaters began in the 1980s, inspired by American sitcoms where characters often wore oversized, brightly colored sweaters with kitschy designs. These sweaters featured decorations like jingle bells, tinsel, candy canes, elves, snowmen, gingerbread men, wreaths, mistletoe, reindeer, bows, and vibrant lights, aiming to be as eye-catching and over-the-top as possible.

Today, ugly Christmas sweaters are loved worldwide and are a funny tradition.

In the United States, there is a funny tradition called the "ugly sweater" tradition. During the holiday season, people wear colorful and old-fashioned sweaters with silly and kitschy designs like reindeer, snowmen, or blinking lights. Some sweaters look so bad that they’re funny! Families, friends, or schools sometimes organize "ugly sweater" contests to see who has the most ridiculous sweater. It's just for fun!
