Thanks to Richard Buchanan I like defining myself as a design thinker, that is who is able to connect all the fragments of the other specialised subject matters (psychology, philosophy, art, science...) that have become too narrowed down to address common problems and matters of daily life.

Guy Debord used to say:

Daily life is life and its real, therefore should be analysed and not cast aside from things more worthy of study.

We need to start looking at design as an integrative discipline which connects and integrates knowledge from specialised disciplines to address problems of the present.
These problems have a "wickedness" that needs to stay there during the whole design process; there is no definitive condition or limit to the design problems. The solution can be everywhere and everything, since the wicked problem has no determined cause. This is the nature of the design problem, since it doesn't practice in specific categories; it is a problem that affects different fields of study. That's why wicked problems can only be approached by design thinking, which tries to understand it rather than solve it in a definitive way.

Anyway, while practicing, designer must intervene on a specific subject (case study): a specific subject of study for a universal scope.

I've always beed fascinated by how the environment we live in affects the way we behave and act, so I started researching on the theme of place, non-place and heterotopia.
Particularly I was interested in the opposition between old places (historical cities, small countryside villages etc.) and the new cities, the so-called smart cities. Places characterised by a high level of technology which aims to make life easier.
So I started observing the places around me and I started noticing that people are more and more focused on their screen instead of what surrounds them in the real life.
Mobile technology aims to connect people from all over the world at any time, but are we really connected in real life?
Our smartphones are becoming an extension of our bodies and together with bluetooth accessories such as earbuds people tend more and more to isolate themselves in public spaces.
That's when I figured out that my focus wasn't on places but on people, on human interactions and how the way we establish human interaction is changing.
The transformation of places is at the same time cause and effect of the change of human relationships. And by asking why and by going deeper and deeper into the problem I got to my wicked problem: SOCIAL ISOLATION.
