Mr. Pruitt has recently discovered videoconferencing. He wanted his students to explore different cultures, so he set up conferences with India, China, and Australia. His students weren't as engaged as he had hoped, because it wasn't in their interest range. So, Mr. Pruitt went back to the drawing board. Mr. Pruitt, after conversing with his colleagues, decided to design a microloan-themed project-based assessment for an upcoming unit of study on Africa. Mr. Pruitt was able to use $100 from his Kiva account and split his class into 4 groups, so each group had $25 for their investment. As students narrowed down their potential borrowers, Mr. Pruitt arranged video conferences where each potential candidate lived so that his students could ask them questions in order for them to make their final decisions. Overall, Mr. Pruitt was able to keep his student's engaged throughout the entire unit to where a student stated, "We may not have changed the world, but we just changed someones life."

One strategy that really stuck out to me was student collaboration. Student collaboration can be a powerful thing, if you know how to incorporate it properly and effectively. Kaitlyn McGlynn and Janey Kozlowski wrote an article called "Empowering Students through Collaboration". They state that, " Student collaboration is an effective vehicle for student learning. However, student grouping needs to be crafted purposefully. If done purposefully, collaborative opportunities provide natural support for struggling students while challenging all students to elevate their level of work." (p. 67). Students are able to gain a deeper level of thinking when asked to collaborate with their peers. Students tend to be more responsible and ask more questions when in a group. Lessons can be more than just memorizing, when you add in student collaboration and make it useful to your students.
