Summary: Soldiers were growing very sick during the winter of 1777-1778 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. They were in extremely harsh conditions, not well fed, and contaminating each other with sickness. Albigence Waldo, a surgeon, said "I am Sick - discontented - and out of humour. Poor food - hard lodging - Cold Weather - fatigue - Nasty Clothes - nasty Cookery - Vomit half my time - smoak'd out my senses - the Devil's in't - I can't Endure it". This shows how easily disease could spread because it even spread to the doctors who were there to take care of the ill. He also shows the type of people that come to him for help in similar conditions as him, by saying, "He comes, and crys with an air of wretchedness and despair, I am Sick, my feet lame, my legs are sore, my body cover'd with this tormenting Itch - my Clothes are worn out, my Constitution is broken, my former Activity is exhausted by fatigue, hunger and Cold, I fail fast I shall soon be no more!". He ends by highlighting the idea that the families back home are not suffering, and "These same People are willing we should suffer every thing for their Benefit and advantage, and yet are the first to Condemn us for not doing more....". This shows that families are not fully appreciating the hard work and struggle of those in the war.

Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated."
this quote explains that people were not grateful and did not appreciate the things that they had. the little things in life that one always has should still be appreciated.
2. “while we were in a dependent state.

"To see men without Clothes to cover their nakedness—without Blankets to lay on—without Shoes, by which their Marches might be traced by the Blood from their feet,"
What this quote is saying is the men need supplies as some men barely have any clothes to wear and some men don't even have clothes in the first place so they need supplies.
"Marching through frost & Snow, and at Christmas taking up their Winter Quarters within a days March of the enemy, without a House or Hutt to cover them till they could be built & submitting to it without a murmur, is a Mark of patience & obedience which in my opinion can scarce be parallel'd…,"
What this quote is saying we need supplies because some people don't even have shoes to walk with so their feet are very cold and the soldiers are suffering because they are marching in very harsh snow. They also need some place to stay that is warm just in case they need to stay at take a rest.
'I do not mean to exclude altogether the idea of patriotism. I know it exists, and I know it has done much in the present contest. But I will venture to assert, that a great and lasting War can never be supported on this principle alone—It must be aided by a prospect of interest or some reward. For a time it may, of itself, push men to action—to bear much—to encounter difficulties; but it will not endure unassisted by interest.,"
What Washington in saying is this quote is the patriots aren't going to keep just because of the idea of Patriotism they need more of a reason to fight they need an incentive sure it's fine now but later they need an incentive to keep fighting.

Valley Forge was the turning point of the American Revolution. The British had conquered the capital of Philadelphia and colonists were forced to take shelter in the harsh winter with no resources or supplies in 1777-1778. Here, many soldiers died from disease. The thousands of deaths left the surviving Patriots feeling empowered to take back their capital, leading to them winning the war. Here, soldiers are seen huddling by a fire to keep warm in the harsh winter of 1777-1778.

This primary source shows the disadvantages the colonists currently have, regarding things such as supplying troops, giving basic needs such as a shirt to soldiers, etc. At the beginning of the paragraph, it states, “Since the Month of July, we have had no assistance from the Quartermaster General [the officer in charge of supplying the troops]”. Next, the acts that the British parliament are establishing creates problems with money for the colonists. In the middle of the paragraph, it states, “the first indeed we have now little occasion of [for] few men having more than one Shirt...and Some none at all”. Lastly, the colonist soldiers were unfit for basic duties of a soldier, as they had little to no clothing. It states, “a further proof of the inability of an Army under the circumstances of this, to perform the common duties of Soldiers we have, by a field return this day made no less than 2898 Men now in Camp unfit for duty because they are barefoot and otherwise naked and by the same return it appears that our whole strength in continental Troops”.
