The University of Manchester is committed to providing a laptop to every new Postgraduate Researcher to help you to carry out your research. 

Once you have created your IT account  you can submit an application for a laptop. Further  information and instructions on how to apply can be found here.

For a standard specification laptop, you will need approval from your supervisor. If you require a higher specification laptop, you will need approval from either your supervisor or the relevant budget holder.   

Postgraduate Researchers who require access beyond the stated opening times will therefore need to ensure that their ID Card has been activated to allow for extended access. Please note that this also applies to technical areas and the internal access doors to the workspace on Floors Three to Six.

You can use SafeZone to:  

• 'Check in' any time of day – to keep you safe on campus, if you’re studying or working late or alone on campus

You can then showcase your profile on the University’s Research Explorer portal.

The Library supports the research community with a series of workshops, online resources and drop-in sessions.  Researchers can: 

• Choose from a selection of workshops including Shut up and Write, writing retreats, enhancing your public speaking skills, systematic reviews, managing the challenges of research and reference management

You should have frequent informal meetings with you Supervisor (at least every 2 weeks) and quarterly formal planning meetings and also meet on a regular basis with your co-supervisor. 

A PGR Advisor (Pastoral) is an independent academic staff responsible for pastoral support and advice, and ensuring you are making good progress and being properly supervised.  

It is recommended to meet at least once or twice each year with your PGR advisor.  

You will be informed shortly who your assigned PGR advisor is.
