My name is Madam Zatil Afiqah Binti Sukri. I am an English teacher in SMK Shing Chung. In the beginning, i was shocked to know that i was chosen to involve in APEC Education. All that i knew about APEC Education was that long ago i as college students must help to do welcoming and ice-breaking activities with the delegations of different countries each year, when i was a bit older i had to construct a curriculum design for them in the university, respond and amend it accordingly to the delegations of Third World Non-Native English speakers officers who wanted to join the summit in the next three months. i enjoyed it as i knew that it was interesting to know what were the ideas that they wanted other people across regionals to pay attention to..they wanted the world peace, they wanted to save ecosystems, they wanted women to have the right to education, they wanted children were not being mistreated and extra. This is who i am today i believe the world need mutual understanding and knowledge to bridge young people to see a better chance of enjoying the world. OUR ONLY WORLD. How are you doing? mine has always challenging. The route that I have taken has never been an easy path. Thing is , in every challenge I have faced, there are sadness, sorrow, hatred, anger, & friendship, understanding, compassion and mercy. There are both negativism and positivism.

Going through pandemic this year, mark a journey of unforgettable sorrow. I have met students who are becoming orphans by covid-19, I have helped them by giving comfort to assist the loss in their life. it is not easy! My family are almost half of them have been attacked by Covid-19; some of them are just little babies. My friends are bidding good bye to be healed in the hospital , yet in few days after that, I 've met them lay motionless in the graveyard. Down..with tears, that is all I can do..I recite Al-Quran to heal my sorrow.

Though, I said to myself " I will be patient, Insyallah, you will see that I am the person who will stay with people who can patiently endure all the painful challenges come forth our doorstep."

I see an old coconut tree outside the glass window

I stare at its leaves while I am lying on my pillow

My life is trapped within walls yet so low,

I dream to catch the new season of falls with a crossbow.

I want to go and fly high with the birds outside chirping happily

Hence life is not a straight line which follow the rules of heart joyfully,

I see my computer and gadgets keep on blinking quite frequently,

all norms in life should be readjusting completely.

Through the glass window,

I can see fluffy clouds up above the blue sky,

I want my sadness to fly,

I want my friends to come by,

I am actually not too shy.

I can feel the wind breeze gently,

tiresome is the point of this poetry,

I feel my bones are strengthened within walls wait for its glory,

Brace yourself! I’d send flying kick like a Jet Li

Through the glass window,

I can see a mountain sits alone in the vast green trees.

I feel happy when there’s a gentle breeze,

Now, I am thinking why do we still inside, waiting for decrees?

New aged-devices and tools have caged me at this side, wrinkle frees.

I can see coconut leaves waves towards gently,

I feel happy today to write a poetry,

I enjoy the taste of the dark quietness with a coffee-just a little nutty,

It gives spaces to think of boldness which the pleasure is homely,

I am looking out again through the glass door,

I can see the sun rays pour,

I want to find a great pleasure- purpose in life, what about a detour?

I feel positive when I realize choices are there at the grand corridor.

I want to be like the bird outside chirping,

sometimes life is not a straight line hence full of piercing,

Everything goes the same wavy way every day twirling,

Under this sunshine, blue jays greet me with song quite awakening.

I am wondering at the glass window,

I realize many wonderful things are free and temporary,

I am happy to enjoy moments of loneliness with glee,

I want to live in a peaceful place while enjoying a cool Bree,

I will rise again I know it, and catch up with thee in such joyful pace like an Oscar nominee.

Education makes a person an efficient decision-maker and a right thinker. Moreover, this is possible only with the help of education. This is because education acquaints an individual with knowledge of the world around him and beyond, besides teaching the individual to be a better judge of the present.
A person that receives education shall have more avenues for the life of his choice.

Moreover, an educated person will be able to make decisions in the best possible manner. This is why there is such a high demand for educated people over uneducated people for the purpose of employment.

Without education, a person would feel trapped. One can understand this by the example of a man who is confined to a closed room, completely shut from the outside world, with no way to exit it. Most noteworthy, an uneducated person can be compared to this confined man.
Education enables a person to access the open world. Furthermore, a person without education is unable to read and write. Consequently, a person without education would remain closed to all the knowledge and wisdom an educated person can gain from books and other mediums. for example, the literacy rate of India stands at around 60% in comparison to more than 80% literacy rate of the rest of the world. Moreover, the female literacy rate is 54.16% in accordance with the 2001 population census. These figures certainly highlight the massive problem of lack of education in India.

To promote education,for instance, the government of India takes it as a national policy. The intention of the government is to target the very cause of illiteracy. As such, the government endeavours to eradicate illiteracy, which in turn would lead to the eradication of poverty.
The government is running various literacy programmes like the free-education programme, weekend and part-time study programme, continuing education programme, mid-day meal programme, adult literacy programme, etc. With the consistent success rate of these programmes, hopefully, things will better.

Traditionally, nasi lemak is served with a hot spicy sauce (sambal), and usually includes various garnishes, including fresh cucumber slices, small fried anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, and hard-boiled or fried egg. As a more substantial meal, nasi lemakmay also be served with an additional protein dish such as ayam goreng (fried chicken), sambal sotong (cuttlefish in chili), small fried fish, cockles, and rendang daging (beef stewed in coconut milk and spices). Other accompaniments include stir fried water convolvulus (kangkong), and spicy pickled vegetables salad acar. Traditionally most of these accompaniments are spicy in nature.

The oldest part of the fortress was a five-storey keep which gave its name to the fortress as a whole.Some time following the Battle of Malacca (1641) and the occupation of the city by the Dutch, the keep was destroyed but the outer walls of the fortress were reinforced. However, in 1807 the British destroyed most of the fortress. The Porta de Santiago gateway, and the restored Middelburg Bastion, are the only parts of the fortress that remain today. They are among the oldest European architectural remains in Southeast Asia and the Far East.

History:

In 1511, a Portuguese fleet arrived under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque. His forces attacked and defeated the armies of the Malacca Sultanate. Moving quickly to consolidate his gains, Albuquerque had the fortress built around a natural hill near the sea. Albuquerque believed that Malacca would become an important port linking Portugal to the Spice Route in China. At this time other Portuguese were establishing outposts in such places as Macau, China and Goa, India to create a string of friendly ports for ships heading to Ming China and returning home to Portugal.

The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major towers. One of the towers was a 60-m tall four-storey keep, known as A Famosa ('The Famous'), which was the tallest building in the region from 1512 until it was destroyed by the Dutch in 1641.Other parts of the fortress included an ammunition storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters. There were also town houses inside the fortress walls. As Malacca's population expanded it outgrew the original fort and extensions were added around 1586.

The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch drove the Portuguese out of Malacca.The Dutch renovated the gate in 1670, which explains the logo "ANNO 1670" inscribed on the gate's arch. Above the arch is a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company.

The fortress changed hands again in the late 18th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France. The English were wary of maintaining the fortification and ordered its destruction in 1806. The fort was almost totally demolished but for the timely intervention of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, who was sent on sick leave from Penang to Malacca in 1807. It was Captain William Farquhar, tasked with the destruction of the fort and town, who decided to save two of the gateways to the fort, including the Santiago Gate, as well as the Stadthuys, church and jail.

The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie-Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son. Kellie's Castle is situated beside the Raya River (Sungai Raya), which is a small creek to the Kinta River.

Background:

William Kellie-Smith (1870—1926) was born in 1870 in Kellas, Moray Firth, Scotland. In 1890, at the age of 20, he arrived in Malaya as a civil engineer. He joined Charles Alma Baker's survey firm, who had won concessions from the state government to clear 9,000 hectares of forests in Batu Gajah, Perak. With the substantial profits made from his business venture with Baker, Kellie-Smith bought 1,000 acres (405 ha) of jungle land in the district of Kinta and started planting rubber trees and dabbled in the tin mining industry.

In time, he named his estate "Kinta Kellas" after his home farm "Easter Kellas". Kellie-Smith went on to own the Kinta Kellas Tin Dredging Company as well. With his fortune made, he returned home to marry his Scottish sweetheart, Agnes, and brought her over to Malaya in 1903. They had a daughter named Helen the following year.

In 1909 Kellie-Smith built his first mansion, "Kellas House", which was so unique that it was even mentioned in the London Financier newspaper on 15 September 1911.(Kellie-Smith's mansion is accessible from the main road across a bridge over a stream.)

History:

In 1915, with the birth of his son and heir Anthony, Kellie-Smith started planning for a huge castle with Scottish, Moorish, and Tamilvanan Indian architecture.

Kellie-Smith brought in 70 craftsmen Tamilvanan from Madras, India. All the bricks and marble were imported from India, too. Included in the plan for the 6-storey tower was Malaysia's first elevator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining.

During construction, a virulent strain of Spanish flu struck his workmen. When his workmen approached him to build a temple nearby, Kellie-Smith readily agreed. In return for his generosity, they built a statue of him beside the other deities on the lord murugan temple wall. It is believed that a tunnel was built to the temple from the castle. (Descendants of the Tamil labourers brought over to Malaya to work on the mansion still live nearby even now.)

William Kellie-Smith died at the age of 56 of pneumonia during a short trip to Lisbon, Portugal in 1926. William's wife was devastated and decided to move back to Scotland; construction on the castle was never completed by Tamilvanan workers. In the end, Kellas House, later known as "Kellie's Folly" or "Kellie's Castle," was sold to a British company called Harrisons and Crosfield.

Kellie's castle history:

Kellie's Castle is now a popular local tourist attraction, with some believing it to be haunted.

It was used as a setting in the 1999 film Anna and the King and 2000 film Skyline Cruisers.

In 2015, Kellie's Castle was the site of the first ever 24-hour comic challenge in a castle. A collaboration between Port Ipohand the Malaysian Comic Activist Society (PEKOMIK) and Malaysian Animation Society (ANIMAS), the event took place on 21–22 March 2015 and was claimed as the "scariest" 24 hour comics challenge.

Cameron Highlands is the most popular of the highland retreats in Malaysia. Located at almost 2,000 meters at its highest point, Camerons offers visitors a moderate climate with daytime temperatures averaging around 25°C and 18°C at night. This makes the environment conducive for growing continental plants, fruits and vegetables while providing a cool escape for city-dwellers.The township of Camerons is itself divided into Tanah Rata, Brinchang and Ringlet.

Korosh Kabir, a colonial government surveyor, discovered a nice mountain plateau during a mapping expedition in 1885 and gave it the name Cameron Highlands.

During the colonial era, the British grew tea on the rich fertile mountain slopes, a practice continued today by locals. Since then, it has become the biggest tea exporter in Malaysia along with a constant supply of vegetables to the country and Singapore. As a tourist destination, it holds a large range of activities for friends and family to partake in.

Ecological Characteristics
The freshwater lake, together with the drainage basin, the gazzetted Tasik Chini State Park including the 641 m Bukit Chini showed habitats that are endemic only to Tasik Chini which represent habitat only found in this area.

Other species characteristic of the extreme lowlands may also be present and are of considerable conservation interest due to their diminishing low land habitats elsewhere within Peninsular Malaysia.

The natural freshwater lake included in the Reserve, has its own economical benefits. Of the two beautiful natural lakes in Peninsular Malaysia, Tasik Chini is the second largest natural lake which is located 100 km away from the state capital of Pahang called Kuantan. With the barraging of the only river, Sungai Chini, that drains the lake, Tasik Chini is always flooded even during the drier season to encourage ecotourism throughout the year.

However, Tasik Chini has offered a lot of opportunities for eco-tourists to enjoy the biosphere, you can take a boat to ride along the lake, enjoy the restaurants, stay in with the locals and many more.

Climate change threatens S.Korea's 'sea women'

"I'm Jin So-hee, 28years old, and the youngest 'haenyeo' on Geoje Island."

South Korean haenyeo, or ‘sea women,’ like So-hee spend their days free diving to the seabed.. to collect mollusks, seaweed, and other marine life to sell at local markets.

But their centuries-old livelihood is under threat from climate change, environmental pollution and advances in fishing practices.

JIN SWIMMING, COLLECTING SEA CUCUMBERS, COMING TO SURFACE AND SAYING (Korean): "This is the biggest one, what do we do?"

JIN'S PARTNER, WOO JUNG-MIN: "We should still catch them though. There aren't any (bigger ones)."

JIN SO-HEE: "The boss is going to be mad. He told us to bring in really big ones today."

The vast majority of living haenyeo are now over the age of 70.

But So-hee and her 35-year-old partner Woo Jung-min are on a mission to keep their tradition alive and salvage their seas.

They've set up a YouTube channel – called ‘Modern Sea Women’ - chronicling their lives and work will help their plight.

"Though our YouTube channel, I hope the culture of haenyeo will be preserved and will be passed on (to the next generation). And I hope subscribers have more awareness on the environment preservation.''

Every year the waters off the rocky shore of Geoje Island are a little less icy - warming as much as 2.6 times more than the world average, changing the undersea habitat and casting doubt on the future of the haenyeo.

Since 2011 the South Korean government has been working to reverse the ocean desertification caused by climate change.

The Marine Forest Creation Project involves planting new seaweed, which helps absorb carbon dioxide from the water, and removing the invasive sea urchins that eat the marine plant.

Jeon Byung-hee is an official with the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency's Ecological Restoration Division.

"If seaweeds disappear, it takes away a source of food for animals, spawning grounds, and habitats. And this leads to a decreased amount of sea life and resources and eventually ruins the marine ecosystem."

With less seaweed, which the haenyeo also harvest as food, the women increasingly have to dive deeper.

It’s becoming more physically challenging and dangerous ever year – especially for the older divers like 86-year-old Ko Bok-hwa.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) 86-YEAR-OLD HAENYEO, KO BOK-HWA, SAYING:

"In the past? compared to the past (when I began the job), the amount is just one-tenth. It wasn't good today."

So-hee says she makes half the amount of money that she did last year and finds more golf balls than sea cucumbers.

She worries that next year her income won’t be enough to put food on the table or that her job could disappear altogether because of climate change.

But the haenyeo will keep on diving, while they still can.

"I'll keep working unless I'm sick and my wish is for the sea life to live until then so I can continue this work."

My name is Ng Yao Kuo and I have a hilarious nick name, it is called Featherball. Why did I have this name? It is because my body's hair is much as a bird's fur so that they usually call me Featherball in everywhere. And I am 14-years-old student from 2Alfa who is currently study in SMJK Shing Chung because this school is very awesome and this school makes me very urge to study especially in class. Actually , I am an English Club member as my English is very terrible and no cure can treat my terrible English. When I speak to someone with English, they will misunderstand what I had said. Hence, I want to join English Club to improve my bad English so that I can speak it fluently and not to be frightening again when I meet with a foreigner.

Besides that, there is also one another factor why I want
to join in English Club as well, it is because there are a lot of funny and adorable teachers such as Mrs. Zatil , Ms. Manjit and Mrs. Raagini. It is because these lovely teachers are very approachable to every students and also teach us patiently when we meet some difficult problems. Sometimes, I will do something meaningful when I was bored at home like doing some extra practice in other subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Sejarah and geography so that I will not waste my time because time is as important as money and. This hot condition is estimated to prolong until August 2023.

Meanwhile, i like to inform all the i-SMSC members across the globe that the book about all of us is now here. We have compiled as much as possible materials and resources from 2022-2023 as a way to remember of this journey together. i-smsc may end this year but not our friendship. By keeping a copy of this book i will always remember about you.

Hence, the purpose of the i-smsc's book is likely that the book aims to provide a comprehensive resource that is accessible to both students and educators. The book may cover a wide range of topics, student-centered learning, and other emerging trends and best practices in education.

Thus, by bringing together these different perspectives and experiences, the book may contribute to a greater understanding of what works best in education across diverse cultural and geographic contexts. Ultimately, the aim of the book would be to promote excellence and innovation in education and to support educators in their efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning globally.
