Choice of path

The first theme I will be covering is "Choice of path". The idea of this theme is the freedom to choose which path to take. Whether it may be a smooth path or a rough one, the choice can change the future for worse or for better. The choice made by he who walks the path. A poem this is demonstrated in is "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" by 2pac Shakur.

Perseverance

The second theme I will be covering is the idea of perseverance. This theme means to continue pushing forward despite the difficulty or obstacle. To persevere is to continue on your path of travel. Through difficulty or complexity, you must get to the end. A poem that demonstrates this is "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes.

Related?

These two themes are related because when choosing path one must weigh all the pros and cons of both. But once a path is chosen, he who walks the path must Persevere through all the ups and downs of the path and any obstacles they may face. They must push on and keep walking. Every person and or thing that walks the path has the option to sit down and end their journey. The reward of accomplishment is given only to those who choose to finish.

This poem demonstrates the idea of "the Choice of Path" because the poem states,
"Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams/ it learned 2 breath fresh air"(Shakur, 5-6). In saying "by keeping its dreams" he means when dreams are kept in mind and not forgotten about, anything can be accomplished. When you choose to continue walking down your path despite poor circumstances and environment.

This poem demonstrates the idea of perseverance because Langston Hughes depicts a mother speaking to her son about giving up in life. The poem states,
"Life for me ain't been no crystal stair/ It's had tacks in it/ And splinters/ And boards torn up"(Hughes 2-5). Here, the "Mother" talks about a harsh, rough path that she has been taking. She also states,
"But all the time/ I'se been a climbin on"(Hughes 8-9). She states that despite the difficulty in her path she continues to push onward to reach "the top".
