Hello
I am veena and currently i do not manage any team. However, i recently came across a colleague from IT department who was a little down and i noticed her crying in the ladies' restroom. Since it happened before me, I consoled her and realized that she was anxious about being retrenched and she shared that she was the only bread winner for her family. She was also afraid that because of her eczema no one would employ her. I listened to her story and then I asked why does she think that she would be the one to be retrenched. She said because she felt that her performance was not good. I asked her if her manager/supervisor thought the same. When she answered no, and I also questioned about her family. I realized that she was losing her confidence and she had no support from her family members. So, I let her console herself first. Then, over the lunch, I spoke to her and asked her to look at the bright side, the IT department is doing very well and they were in fact hiring more people. So, she should not worry about getting retrenched. I also advised her to talk to her boss if she was stressed out at work and to upgrade her skills to keep up with the current IT skills.

Hi hi,

I am Steph from the Marcom team. I manage a team of 20 staff. Recently, I noticed that I have a staff that was withdrawn from the team and have shown little to no effort of hitting our monthly KPI. Hence, I spoke to the staff involved and found out it was because he had been away from home for far too long due to Covid. His family is in the Philippines. He hasn't seen his children for 2 years plus now. He is worried as well if he were to leave Singapore now would he be able to return for his current job. I advised him that tough times would not last and currently the most important for his family is to know he is safe and well in Sg. Other than that, as the sole breadwinner of his family, he needs to prioritize the financial situation. He told me his children need new laptops for their studies. I advised him to use that as a motivation to keep on going and remember that his family depend on him the most.

Hi Guys,
I am Leslie from Marketing department and I do not manage anyone yet. But I was kind of worried about my colleague well being. I tends to notice he has been yawing a lot during office hours.
I did approach him joking asking him is he working as a thief during night time. He got angry and didn't talk to me very much. I find it kind of strange as he use to be a very chatty guy.
Later I did apologize for my earlier statement personally and only then he confide in me that his mother was hospitalized and needed an operation. The hospital needed his decision as the risk is quite high and also the operation fee amount up front is not a simple figures. The reason he is yawing most of the time is that he tries to catch up with his work and deadline. After work he have to take up grab driving to earn extra income to manage the hospital expenses. He says he felt so stress up that sometime he lack behind his office work assignment. So I volunteer to help partly with his office assignment and suggest to him to seek help from the company HR department as to how, the company can help him to overcome in his financial problems. He took the advise and approach the HR department. Then after a week, I found he looks fresher, didn't yaw anymore and can feel our co-working relation and understanding was much better than before.

Hi,
I am Ann. I am working with a group of teachers in the preschool.
Recently I have a teacher who has received a few complaints from some unreasonable parents. the school management and I are very supportive of her but she is very negative about herself. even contemplating changing her work hours to half day. She also sent me links of burnt out. I am thinking if giving her time off from work and asking her to go on leave would help her. My concern is that she might go to a negative point that she might even want to quit.

Hi,
I am Susan and I am currently managing a small group of teachers in a preschool. I just joined the centre a month ago.
There is a teacher who is taking the Nursery class. She had a degree in Early Childhood and 4 years experience in preschool setting. She shared that she is clueless about the centre's curriculum and did not understand what she must do. I took a week to brief her and after the briefing, she told me that she was clearer and I can see that she is trying to carry out the curriculum by coming in early and preparing for the class.
As I did my rounds in the morning, I noticed that her children were always running around the classroom/corridor and did not seem to listen to her. I noticed that she gave very brief instructions and will just walk ahead of the children. I reiterated to her that her instructions must be clear and explicit so that the children can understand her. I told her to check with the children if they understood it too. She tried to do what I had advised her but her children were still not able to follow her instructions. I showed her how to do it and she asked me why the children were listening to me, and not her. After a few more sessions with her, I realised that she did not have eye contact with the children. I asked her if she can see the children well. She said that she had some eye problem and was not able to see further than 2 m. I advised her to go for an eye-check and I continually checked on her, hopefully to give her the confidence and assurance that she was doing fine. x
As I have been spending time with her, my work snowballed and now i also very stressed with my workload. On one hand, I tried to help her so that there will be minimum accidents in her class. But I realised that she needs more than help. She needs to do something with her eyesight and be more confidence in taking the class. I have told her to get her eye checked by this weekend and hopefully, she can give me more assurance of her visual problem.

He had difficulty paying attention and wasn't delivering the work he used to.

It got to a point where I needed to schedule a 1-on-1 session to ask him what's happening, and only then did I start to learn more about his changing perspective about our work and his time here in the company.

Dear Pigar,

Yes, I know what you mean and thank you for your advise.
Yesterday after reading your post, I brought the teacher to the nearby optician shop and the optical staff there told her that she has a virus attack in her eye and asked her to get medical attention. Now she is on mc for the next 3 days. I cannot find another teacher to cover the class and has to stand in. Double stress. But it is a good problem as her problem is solved. Hopefully, she gets better.
In addition, there are also lesser children in her class (the parents are keeping the children at home due to the current COVID situation) and it is not so stressful for me to take care especially the custodial care part.
