In order to have effective classroom management, we must establish rules and expectations by using positive and encouraging wording. Having consistent routines, and proactively teaching students responsibility, helps keep them engaged, focused, and on track. It also helps risk wasted time that could be used for teaching. Every minute and every second is valuable time for children to learn. When we have effective classroom management, we have a good flowing routine.
Having my classroom outdoors, I always make sure to review with my students in a way that makes it positive and engaging. For them, it's a change of scenery from the classroom so sometimes they forget it's a class, just like any other, and there are rules and expectations. This image is some of the expectations I review with my students. I also have different reward systems depending on the grade. For instance, with 3rd grade, they have dojo points. I coach both classes together so there will be days that I'll start the class with each getting 5 dojo points. However, they must follow directions and classroom expectations. Each time a student fails to do so, they lose one of those points. This is something I do on occasion as I don't want them to behave well only if rewarded. I will also sometimes reward the class as a whole with dojo points for working together as a team to follow directions and meet class expectations.

A positive classroom culture is a warm and inviting environment setting where students don't feel threatened or uncomfortable and are able to express themselves freely without being judged. They can take risks while learning and growing, not being scared to do so feeling they may be judged by others. We take time to develop relationships with our students which makes it a warm, inviting environment. In my "outdoor" classroom, I make sure students always feel a sense of being welcomed, valued, and ready to learn. I use positive affirmations and motivational sayings. I also actively participate with my students which motivates and inspires them. My students are constantly moving and staying engaged. I make the activities fun and exciting all while they are gaining knowledge of physical activity.

Behavior Intervention Strategies

Strategies to use in order to help promote a positive learning environment are to first start with a daily classroom routine and expectations. Both the expectations and routine should be clearly understood by the students. It's also important to make sure the teacher has the classroom setup so there's close proximity to students while teaching. The teacher should be able to easily walk around and be close to students at any time, especially those who need extra attention. Another way to promote a positive learning environment is by positively reinforcing the targeted behavior. Rephrase the words so it sounds more encouraging than a demand. For instance, instead of saying "I need you to stop talking" the teacher could say "We always walk looking forward with our magic finger".
How we speak to the children is also very important. Using positive paraphrasing and/or positioning while praising them for their work, good behavior, staying focused, and following directions can help detour them from acting out and increase a positive learning environment. Positive wording can be encouraging for students.
If a behavioral situation arises, the teacher should take a moment to evaluate the situation and handle it in a calm manner. Also, allowing students with extreme behavior to have special tasks can help detour extreme behavior. For instance, during PE, if a student with extreme behavior issues starts to act out, the teacher could ask them to be their mini-assistant and assign some tasks that they would enjoy helping with.
There could also be a reward system for good behavior whether be dojo points, a clip moved up, or a little prize from the treasure box.
It's also important that students have "mental" breaks, whether recess, Physical Education, or even a brain break video. School can be overwhelming for some and allowing them to have a break can help make them feel more relaxed and ready to learn, especially those who have extreme behavior.

Keeping students engaged and increasing rigor in the classroom is vital in today's education. To help increase student engagement and rigor in the classroom, it's important to create an emotionally safe classroom and environment, teach self-awareness about knowledge, use movement, create teamwork that emphasize accountability, allow self directed learning, engage with students interests and allow them to express their interests without judgement, have minimal supervised activities to fill "dead time", project based learning.
In this picture, I assigned a STEM project to both 5th grade classes. This project not only increased student engagement but also allowed students to to explore different concepts, ideas and solutions around a real-world problem (recycling). By using STEM based learning, it blends both rigor and student engagement and provides the means of connecting real world situations while also increasing student engagement.

As teachers, we can help students build their interpersonal skills by setting an example for the students. It's important that we stay calm when a situation arises and always keep a positive attitude. They learn by watching us and how we interact with them and other students. Teaching them the importance of empathy, respect, effective communication, conflict resolution, active listening, collaboration, social-emotional skills, and problem-solving are also other ways we, as teachers, can help students develop their interpersonal skills.
