The “STEM to STEM” project at Western Local Schools is an innovative, place-based learning initiative that connects K–6 STEAM students with 7–12 Vocational Agriculture students through the creation of a student-led fresh cut flower business. Rooted in the traditions and opportunities of rural Southern Ohio, students will work collaboratively to start seeds using hydroponics and winter sowing, grow flowers in the school greenhouse and raised beds, and market handcrafted bouquets within the local community. Younger students will explore science, engineering, and creativity through hands-on investigations, while older students will take leadership roles in greenhouse management, floral design, entrepreneurship, and mentorship. This project blends science, technology, engineering, art & agriculture, and math into meaningful real-world experiences that empower students to become innovators, problem-solvers, and community contributors. By partnering with local organizations such as OSU Extension, KB Flower Farm, Fran’s Greenhouse, Pike Soil and Water, and the Pike County Farm Bureau, students will gain authentic agricultural experiences while strengthening community ties. “STEM to STEM” not only cultivates flowers, but also grows leadership, creativity, environmental stewardship, and career-ready skills for rural students at Western Local Schools.

Students in Central Utah learned about the Great Basin Ecosystem and the plants that have adapted to the arid climate here. They grew native species of plants and transplanted them to an area just outside the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

This winter-long, cross-curricular unit utilized the lens of tools used through time to explore the history of the land we now call Maine. The unit included four primary parts: a basket immersive, a forces and motion intensive, Tools Through Time fieldwork and timeline creation, and a range of literacy connections.
