SAN NICOLA A MONTEDORO

The Church San Nicola a Montedoro is located in the oldest and in the highest area of Martina Franca about 400 m high. it looks like a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicola from Bari. This Saint is also venerated in other two churches, San NICOLA del Pendino, and San Nicola dei Greci. In the past the church was also called San Nicola dei poverelli, or San Nicola della pietra, because the church is made by stones. The name San Nicola a Montedoro derives from the area where it was built, Montedoro were an also a castle was built the CASTRUM MARTINAE.

In the past the church was private, now it belongs to the town of Martina Franca.

The little church is among the oldest churches; it probably dates back to the 14th century.

Over the centuries the church has been restructured different times, the most considerable one was in the 17th century.

The Church is characterised by a modest rectangular structure and by late-middle aged architectural elements visible above all from the outside.

The building has got a raised and crossed pitched roof, Its covering has been realised with the typical "chiancarelle" ( typical stones of our area). The facade is marked by a "portale ad ogiva" ogive door, by a 2nicchia a lunetta" (recess that has got the shape of the moon) and by a little "rosone a raggiera" (rose window). At the top there is a little rib vault bell-tower with only one fornice "campanile a vela con un solo fornice".

the walls inside the church are decorated by many paintings. They date back to the 17th century but they were revised different times. These layers of paintings are visible above all on the wall behind the main altar. This painting was revised by the local painter Francesco Carella, in 1802. he was the son of the most famous Domenico Carella who painted the Duke Palace's rooms. From an iconographic point of view we distinguish in the centre the Virgin Mary "effige" (effigy) and downward the Saint Nicola surrounded by other Saints. If you look carefully it is visible that there were other paintings under these ones. If you turn around , on the "costolone" (rib) we can see the figure of an elegant man. He was probably the man who ordered the commission. Then on the right there are the SAint Antonio Abate painting, the Pietas, The Virgin Mary of Rosary with "clipei", that are shields were the most important episodes of the life of Christ are told. On the lateral walls, next to the door, there is the painting of Saint Antonio from Padova and in the other side Saint Francesco from Paola. On the left wall the paintings are ruined. We can catch "La Strage degli innocenti" (the massacre of innocents) and Saint Margherita.
