The acts of John Brown gave Northerners a negative identity because of his murder of people who were pro-slavery. This intensified the sectional crisis greatly. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces ended up creating the "Free Soil Ideology." Its main purpose was to stop slavery from expanding into the west. Free men on free soil deserved a superior system to slavery.
