Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804 - May 19, 1864) was an American writer and man of letters, one of the first and most recognized masters of American literature. He made a great contribution to the formation of the genre of the novella and enriched the literature of Romanticism with the introduction of elements of allegory and symbolism. In 1850 he published his novel, The Scarlet Letter, which brought the writer wide recognition in Europe and became a bestseller, although it did not bring much income. His first book, Fanshawe, was published in 1828, but failed. However, Hawthorne did not despair, he continued to create, wrote many short stories on mystical and fairy-tale themes, published several collections of children's stories (including "Grandfather's Chair", "The Book of Miracles").
The literary period - Romanticism (The Late Romantic Period)

The story takes us to the city of Salem of the XVII century. The author tries to reconstruct the way of life, everyday life, as well as the moral image of his Puritan ancestors. Hester Prine gives birth to a child in the absence of her husband. The citizens do not know where Hester's husband is or if he is alive at all. That is why she gets by with a relatively light punishment from the Puritans of Salem - in the future she is obliged to always wear the letter "A" embroidered with red threads on her clothes ("adultery" - treason). When her husband returns to Salem the woman flatly refuses to tell him the name of the child's father. To avoid even more shame, the couple decide to keep secret the fact that Hester's husband is alive and has already returned home. The man cannot forgive his offense and tries to find out who is the father of Hester's daughter. He finds out that the woman is in love with a young priest. The pastor is very ashamed of the suffering that Hester is suffering because of him, he also secretly wears an embroidered scarlet letter under his clothes, experiencing monstrous mental anguish. The citizens, seeing that the holy father is melting before their eyes, assign a doctor to him for care. This doctor turns out to be Mrs. Prine's husband. The priest can't stand it and tells the truth and voluntarily stands at the pillory himself. Both men die in the final. And Hester and her daughter are leaving for Europe.

The main character is represented by a complex personality with a deep inner world and a desire for freedom. The individuality of Hester's personality was opposed to society. The main characteristic of romanticism here is the conflict between the main characters and the rest of the people. A bright nature opposed the gloomy reality.
Passion was also important for romantics, high feelings were expressed in love, and low feelings were expressed in envy.

The story is insanely instructive, moral, psychological. This book is not for quick reading, but for reflection and thoughtfulness. It is easy to label a person, as happened with the main character of the book, it is easy to consider her weak, unable to solve her problems and stupidly resigned to her lot. But it is much more difficult to understand the life and actions of two people in love, a man and a woman who lived in the 17th century in a colony of ascetic and religiously fanatical Puritans. The sad end of this novel testifies that a decent puritan should spend his whole life atoning for his sin. Such a result, in my opinion, is expected, since the author himself was their descendant, and the novel was written in a realistic, descriptive manner. I enjoyed it. There is something to think about.

Further novels of the writer "Pierre" (1852), "Israel Potter" (1855), "The Crook" (1857), the story "Benito Sereno", a collection of short prose "Stories on the veranda" (1856), which included a wonderful novella "Scribe Bartleby".

The young man Ishmael goes sailing as a sailor on the whaling ship "Pequod". Shortly after sailing from the port, it turns out that the flight of the Pequod is not at all like ordinary whaling flights. The captain of the ship Ahab once loses his leg in a fight with the white whale Moby Dick and now goes to sea to find the monster and give him a fight back. He announces to the team that he intends to pursue the white whale, and nothing will make him give up the chase. Ahab encourages sailors to watch the sea, promising a golden doubloon to the first person who notices the famous white whale. Meanwhile, strange events are happening on the ship. The cabin boy Pip, who spent the night in a barrel in the open sea, is going crazy.
Over time, the "Pequod" overtakes the white whale and chases it for three days. The crew tries to kill him three times, but each time he crashes the whaleboats. On the second day, Fedalla dies, who predicted the whale's departure to Ahab right in front of his nose. On the third day, the captain of the Pequod harpoons Moby Dick, but gets tangled in the line and drowns. Then the white whale smashes the ship and all the boats, thereby killing the entire crew except Ishmael, who escapes in an empty coffin. The next day, the surviving sailor is picked up by the ship "Rachel".

The novel contains many features of a romantic work: the depiction of exceptional characters in exceptional circumstances; the cult of nature and human life in natural conditions; exoticism; the hero is opposed to society (by this hero is meant not Ishmael, but Ahab); the everyday world appears to be chaos, etc. The definiteness of the feelings, desires, and aspirations of his characters separates them from idealistic philosophy. The whole point of the work is that the person remained unconquered.

From the beginning of the book, you realize that it is based on the author's own life experience, and this makes the book even more interesting and more vital.
An amazing work that tells about the long journey and adventures of whalers in search of the largest sea giants.
Moby Dick himself is like an allegory about the meaning of life. Or maybe there is this meaning of life. After all, this extremely strange captain Ahab, having already lost his leg once in the fight with the whale, again hopes to find him and take revenge, and it does not matter who and in what quantity will suffer.
I liked the style of presentation, which allows us to figuratively present an animal that has never been seen before, and unknown information about these amazing huge creatures.

On the way home, he meets Jim Casey, when they come to the farm where Tom spent his childhood, it turns out that it is abandoned. From an elderly neighbor, Mali Graves, they learn that the family moved to Uncle John's farm due to the fact that the bank evicted all the farmers from the land. Tom's family hopes to find happiness in California, as the flyers promise a good salary for relocation. On the spot, they understand that they will not have to wait for a good salary in California due to an overabundance of labor. A ray of light for them is the migrant camp, which is managed by a special committee for assistance to migrants, since the camp is federal, its guests are constantly harassed and provoked by local California authorities. Then the Joads move to a cotton farm. Since Tom can be recognized, he says goodbye to his family, promising to always fight for the rights of the oppressed. In the old house they meet their son and father dying of hunger. Rose offers them to drink breast milk to save them from death. This is the only act of the Joad family that was not in vain.

Socio-historical issues are present in the novel implicitly, I would like to say naive, as if maturing forms, and the choice of characters, the structure, plot, style of the novel are consistently, masterfully sustained by the author at a simple, substantive, if you will, folk level, which exactly corresponds to the ideas of the characters about themselves and the world, determines the accessibility and attractiveness of the work.

I'll start with the main thing, whatever it is, it's a very difficult novel. It becomes even harder when you realize that all the events described are quite real and took place during the Great Depression. This is the story of real people, good people. This is a story about rich people who are guilty of causing the great depression and about innocent, hardworking people who suffer because of the same depression. This is the story of one family, one surname, but at the same time the story of completely different people. This is a novel about injustice, kindness and hopelessness. About strong women and men who endure all lawsuits without tears, and I do not know how to admire them, or sympathize and be horrified by what they can experience inside, hiding their grief, leaving it for later.

Jerome David Salinger (January 1, 1919 - January 27, 2010) was an American writer whose works were published in The New Yorker magazine in the second half of the 1940s and in the 1950s, best known as the author of the novel "The Catcher in the Rye". Salinger's writing career began with the publication of short stories in New York magazines. Salinger's first serious fame came from the short story "The Banana Fish is Well Caught" (1948). In 1951, Salinger published the novel of education "The Catcher in the Rye", which was a resounding success and won the love of readers all over the world. After this novel gained popularity, Salinger began to lead a reclusive life, refusing to give interviews.

The narration comes from the face of a 17-year-old boy who was expelled from another school for academic failure. Holden Caulfield finds no interest in learning and in school activity: he fails four subjects out of five, and is kicked out of school; on a trip to fencing competitions, he forgets sports equipment in the subway and his comrades turn away from him; relations with classmates do not go well, since Holden does not like their aspirations to seem better than they are, to say what they do not think, to do what they are not interested in, etc. This all leads to the fact that Holden feels extremely insecure in society and diligently avoids all forms of friendship, good relationships, and so on. After an argument with a fight with his roommate, Holden decides to leave school a few days earlier than necessary and leaves the dorm, moving into a hotel. Trying to fill the remaining days with at least some activity, Holden goes to bars, meets with former comrades and teachers, but he is disappointed in everything and hates everything. Not enjoying anything, he tries to communicate with his sister Phoebe, with whom he had a warm relationship. Meeting with his sister brings a little relief, she remains probably the only person who can somehow influence him. In a conversation with his sister, Holden says that he would be happy to catch children over The Catcher in the Rye (this is a distorted poem by Burns). The book ends with Holden finally feeling happy when he sees his sister riding the merry-go-round.

Salinger's novel is based on the principle of "compressed time" and covers only three days - Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but in this short period of time the reader gets a full picture of the main character's life, his habits, internal torments, attitude to life. The plot unfolds sequentially, in chronological order, with a detailed description of household details. In an attempt to live an independent life, the hero finds conscience and responsibility in himself. These new sensations are prickly and intrusive, but there is nowhere to get away from them. An example illustrating an internal fracture in his soul is a conversation about escape. When he suggests to Sally (his girlfriend) to run away, she refuses him.

My impression

This book, in my humble opinion, should be included in the top 10 books that every person (especially a teenager) should read.

The book tells the story of a "difficult teenager" who was expelled from another school for failing and because of fear of how his parents would react to this, he does not return home, but wanders around New York. Holden does not want to grow up, hates this reality, it seems to him "not real", full of lies, pathos, affectation. Holden believes that, in his opinion, he has "felt" the adult world, the world of rudeness, gray reality, and he wants to "save" those who have not yet grown up and do not repeat his mistake. The very irony is that the hero is still a child himself, but he really wants to seem older than his years and often (if not always) he does not succeed.
