The Puritans started a movement of religious reform, meaning they wanted to purify the church. They were very simple people who wanted to rid the church of catholics. They believed in Calvinism which include beliefs such as total depravity, predestination and theocracy. Most of these beliefs were about whether you would go to heaven or hell. These beliefs are believed to have caused the witchcraft Hysteria.

In 1620, the Puritans left for the Massachusetts Bay Colony which they considered to be 'the new world'. This was also known as a City Upon a Hill. A City Upon a Hill is a place of complete reform where god would be found in scripture. Here they built schools which strictly taught the bible. This is where the Witch Trials occurred.

The Puritans believed that Satan was acting in the world. They thought he was recruiting witches and wizards to work with him. During this time, the colony was in a time of trouble which made it easy for the Puritans to blame this on Satan. Another possible cause of the witchcraft hysteria could have been teenage boredom. Many teens had nothing to do, for example the group of girls accusing innocent people were most likely just bored and wanted attention. Finally, women would confess to being witches, which allowed others to believe they were actually real.
