I think that you should focus on establishing an environment that sets a tone that's conducive for learning.

This is because I observed a number of students on their phones, instructions were loose and there was a lot of time when you were seated at the front of the class.

I think that you need to have a look at habits of attention in your class, this was apparent at the beginning and end of the lesson. This is because I observed that you didn't check the pupils had the resources they needed and there were interruptions to the learning as a result. Someone was continually laughing and interrupting but no reminders were given and numerous class members were disengaged.

I think that you could have benefitted from focusing on your routines
This is because I observed two or three pupils having to collect whiteboards and/or pens after the review had started and not everyone was engaged with the task

I think that you should consider the quantity and quality of your cold call.

This is because I observed you cold calling each individual pupil multiple times with limited think time and repetition of response. There was no explanation of incorrect or correct answers.

too repetitive re cold calling - overdone, no feedback or exploration re answers kids given, pupils not engaged as a result, pupils giggling. lack of routine - many without white boards, poor routine/lack of presence at end - resulted in poor behaviour /phone out etc.

No challenging of how answer reached, no cross ref with other pupil, same pupils asked multiple questions.

I think that you improve on your classroom routines. This is because at least 3 pupils didn't have the equipment ready to start. Which meant the the starter was delayed. I also noticed the end had no clear routines. I observed phones and equipment on the desks. This could have be more structured.

I think that you need to look at your questioning techniques. I observed that you asked the same person 3 questions and this happened 4 times, all grid reference answers were asked for repeatedly and no feedback was given. Your cold calling bar one time was name first then question posed.

I think that you need to improve how you gain whole class feedback. This is because I observed learners opting out of cold calling, the same learner asked questions multiple times, and show-me boards being used ineffectively.

had a clear task but the collection of responses and providing feedback to check for understanding had missed opportunities.
you asked the same pupil four times for the same response. there was no enquiring into the rationale why they had that response.

I think there is room for development in terms of your classroom routines. During your lesson I observed a lack of routine when collecting and managing resources (3/4 pupils didn’t have any resources). There was lack of consistency in the use of show-me boards and there was no routine when packing up (pupils pushing, jackets on, phone use).

What are your expectations on their routines at the start and end of the lesson. What habits of attention do you think need to be developed from what we observed during that lesson?

Plan would be to ensure you either ask everyone in the room a different question a points throughout the lesson to respond to or use show me boards to get a whole class response and then give appropriate feedback and ascertain next steps for lesson with a move to progress the lesson if class are confident.

Next steps - We are agreeing that you need to go through routines and collecting resources (meeting and greeting at the door to issue instructions on equipment). Reminders of whole school routines i.e no phone in class.

In terms of a plan, you need to reinforce the 3Rs in the classroom alongside positive and meaningful praise. You need to establish clear routines consistently throughout the lesson.

We are in agreement that routines will be your focus for the next few weeks. Aim to have your materials and and resources ready prior to your lesson and spend time planning and practicing the routine with your classes. Agree standards and expectations with your classes.
