The children also completed an array of baseline assessments on place value, arithmetic and times tables so they can reflect on their progress throughout the year.

In our whole class reading lessons, we read a text about a Roman Invasion. In the first lesson, we took turns reading and practiced our reading fluency, then in the following lessons, we delved in deeper to the text whilst exploring new and unfamiliar vocabulary.

Next week, we will begin looking at non-chronological reports.

In the upcoming lesson, we will shift our focus to the impact of our diet on dental health. The children will learn about how the foods and drinks we consume play a significant role in keeping our teeth and mouth healthy. This will help them connect their knowledge about teeth with practical tips for maintaining good oral hygiene.

This week in History, we have been exploring the Romans! The children have been learning about where the Romans came from and how we know they existed. We discussed the evidence left behind by the Romans, such as ancient artifacts, ruins, and written records.

During our lessons, the students were introduced to some new vocabulary related to our topic. Key terms we focused on include:

- Empire: A large group of countries or regions that are controlled by one ruler or government.

- Legion: A large group of soldiers in the Roman army.

- Artifact: An object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.

Next week, we will be looking into why the Romans invaded Britain and will be recalling key facts about these invasions. The children will learn about the motivations behind the Roman conquests and gain a deeper understanding of this significant period in history.

Both children have gone above and beyond in their learning and have made an excellent start to the year! 🎉

We will be writing one on a Roman diet and started the week by looking at different images of Roman food, participated in a role play between a historian and interviewer about the Roman diet. More recently, we analysed the features of an example non-chronological report and considered the impact of features such as heading, subheadings, rhetorical questions, conjunctions and fronted adverbials on the reader.

Next week, we will begin to plan our own non-chronological reports.

Next week, we will shift our focus to Boudica, the warrior queen of the Iceni tribe. We will explore who she was, her role in leading a rebellion against Roman rule, and debate whether her resistance was a good or bad thing from different perspectives. We'll also look at the consequences of her actions and their impact on both the Romans and the Britons.

Next week the children will build on their standard partitioning skills and flexible partitioning skills.

Our young scientists conducted an exciting experiment to understand the effects of different drinks on tooth enamel. To simulate this, we used eggshells as a model for teeth and placed them in four different liquids: water, vinegar, cola, and apple juice. The children made predictions, keenly observed the changes, and drew conclusions about how acidic and sugary drinks can impact our teeth.

The results were astounding! The children were shocked to see the effects on the eggshells and could easily relate this to the importance of brushing their teeth daily to maintain good dental health. For homework, I have asked the children to create a poster that could be displayed in a dentist’s surgery, informing children about how to look after their teeth as well as answering some science questions.

This week, the children got hands-on with an exciting and messy science lesson! 🎉 The children explored the journey of food from the mouth all the way to the colon using a scientific model.

While the children learned that a model is limited because it’s not the real thing, they still found it realistic—and let’s not forget, super messy!

Using cups for the mouth and teeth, a plastic bag for the stomach, and tights to represent the intestines, the class observed the digestive process in action. It was a fantastic way to see science in action and understand how digestion works.

🌟 Our First Science Lesson: Exploring Sound 🌟

This week in science, the children delved into the fascinating world of sound 🎶 as we began our new unit.

Using their knowledge organisers, which were issued before the break, they eagerly engaged with our scientific enquiry of "What is sound?" They set off on an exciting sound walk around the school, discovering firsthand how sound travels and is heard in different environments.

Back in the classroom, the children explored how sound is created and experimented with a triangle, observing how its pitch changed when it touched water. This experiment demonstrated that the higher the pitch, the more vibrations occur per second.

They also had the opportunity to observe vibrations by using a ruler—plucking it while it was placed at the edge of a table to hear the sound as the vibrations moved through it.

To make it even more meaningful, the children placed their hands over their voice boxes, feeling the vibrations when they spoke, helping them understand how sound is created by the vibrations in their own bodies.

Through these experiments, the children gathered plenty of scientific evidence and came to the conclusion that sound is vibration and can travel through various mediums, each in its own unique way. They showed great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the lesson, setting the tone for an exciting term of learning ahead!

This week, pupils took on the exciting scientific question: "Which material is the best insulator of sound?"

The lesson kicked off with the children learning what an insulator is and how it applies in real life.

Next, the children made predictions on which material— cotton wool, tissue, or bubble wrap—would be the best sound insulator, using their reasoning to guide their guesses. They also carefully identified the variables involved, deciding what they would change and what would stay the same to ensure a fair test.

During the experiment, each group tested their hypothesis by recording sound levels with each material to spot clear patterns.

After gathering their data, the children were able to see which material best insulated sound.

They finished their investigation by writing a conclusion to explain whether their predictions were accurate or not, demonstrating fantastic critical thinking skills and then linking this again to real life.

We edited and uplevelled our work before the final published piece which will create a whole class booklet.

   Students practiced recalling multiplication facts for the 3 and 6 times tables fluently. They explored patterns and relationships between these facts, such as how the 6 times table is double the 3 times table.

2. Division Facts
   We also worked on division facts, helping students understand how multiplication and division are connected. For example, if 3 × 6 = 18, then 18 ÷ 6 = 3.

   The children applied their knowledge of the 3 and 6 times tables to solve a variety of word problems and challenges, improving their ability to use these facts in real-life situations.

1. The 11 Times Table
   Students practiced recalling the 11 times table and explored its patterns, such as how the products up to 9 × 11 repeat the digits (e.g., 11, 22, 33). They also learned how this pattern changes for larger numbers (e.g., 11 × 12 = 132).

2. The 12 Times Table
   We introduced the 12 times table, helping students use strategies like doubling the 6 times table to support their understanding. They practiced solving multiplication and division problems involving 12.

3. Applying Knowledge
   The children used their knowledge of the 11 and 12 times tables in problem-solving activities, reinforcing their understanding through real-life contexts and games.

This week, we explored tectonic plate margins and how their movements create mountains. The children were fascinated to learn about different types of plate boundaries and how processes like folding, faulting, and volcanic activity shape the Earth’s surface. We also discussed famous mountain ranges around the world and their formation.

Next week, we’ll continue our mountain journey by diving into the climates and ecosystems of mountain regions, linking this to how plants, animals, and humans adapt to life at high altitudes. Exciting times ahead! 🌿🏔

   • Multiplying by 1: Students discovered that any number multiplied by 1 stays the same (e.g., 7 × 1 = 7).

   • Multiplying by 0: They learned that any number multiplied by 0 equals 0 (e.g., 8 × 0 = 0).

2. Dividing by 1 and Itself

   • Dividing by 1: Students practiced dividing numbers by 1, understanding that the number stays the same (e.g., 9 ÷ 1 = 9).

   • Dividing a Number by Itself: They explored how dividing a number by itself always equals 1 (e.g., 10 ÷ 10 = 1).

   • We discussed the exception of 0 ÷ 0, which is undefined.

3. Problem Solving
   The children applied these rules to solve problems, helping them recognize when to use these operations in real-life scenarios.

Then we moved on to multiplying by 10 by understanding that all digits move one place to the left on the place value chart.

They also revisited their understanding of what all living organisms need to survive by using the helpful mnemonic MRS GREN. This tool helped them remember the 7 life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition

We explored the different parts of plants and discussed their functions, such as how roots absorb water, stems provide support, and flowers attract pollinators. Using this knowledge, we wrote factual statements to demonstrate our understanding of these vital plant parts.

To extend our learning, we used our senses to imagine what it might feel, smell, and sound like to be in a vibrant, blooming garden. This helped us create abstract nouns like "peacefulness," "vitality," and "wonder," connecting emotions and sensations to the natural world.

It was a fantastic start to our learning journey, combining science, creativity, and imagination. We can’t wait to see where the story and the Secret Gardener take us next!

Next week, we will look at column method for multiplying 2 and 3 digits by 1.

Our young scientists have been hard at work exploring the fascinating world of classification!

• Using Venn diagrams, students identified similarities and differences between animals from the desert ecosystem. 🌵🐪

• They also sorted insects into a Carroll diagram based on their observable characteristics, sharpening their observation and reasoning skills. 🐜🦋

This week, we are celebrating Rayan and Zahrah as our Stars of the Week! 🎉 Both have shown exceptional effort, kindness, and leadership in our classroom. Let's give them a big round of applause for their hard work and positive attitudes! 👏

Noah has shown a fantastic understanding of dividing by 10 and 100 in maths this week. Ella is kind and caring and has been a lovely friend.

This week, our class dived into the world of varmints, crafting instructions with fronted time adverbials to describe how this mysterious creature wakes up in the morning and goes about its daily routine. The creativity and imagination on display were fantastic!

Next, we got hands-on by planting table plants! Each group wrote their own step-by-step instructions, then worked together to nurture their new greenery. It was a wonderful blend of learning and teamwork!

To round off the week, we designed persuasive posters to tackle pollution. The children explored persuasive techniques such as eye-catching slogans, bold font changes, repetition, and rhetorical questions to make their messages powerful. The posters were both creative and thought-provoking!

They used these keys to identify the names of various animals and even created their own to classify plants. They understood that combining observations of organisms’ features and then sorting via ‘yes’ and ‘no’ closed questioning, they could separate and organise living things.

Their creativity and critical thinking have been amazing to see!

This week, we focused on using the present perfect tense to describe the activities that had taken place in the secret gardens, highlighting what had been done to protect the environment and combat the impact of the varmints.

We then applied this knowledge in writing speeches, where students described past efforts and explained the importance of continuing to care for the environment. Following this, the class wrote about what actions they would take to save the world and rebuild it, including ideas such as planting more trees, reducing pollution, and protecting natural habitats.

The students demonstrated great creativity and critical thinking, and it was inspiring to see their passion for making a difference. Well done to everyone for their hard work and thoughtful contributions!

This week, we’re thrilled to recognize some amazing achievements in 3A. A huge well done to the following superstars:

⭐ Star of the Week:

• Sloane for her outstanding dedication to learning and for being a wonderful mentor by helping a peer in such a kind and supportive way.

• Paulo for showing incredible aspiration and dedication, striving for his goals, and making a huge improvement in his presentation.

Building on their skills, they created classification keys again, yet now include both plants and animals, using closed questions to sort and identify the living things they discovered.

Later on in the week, we then explored remainders and how they are what is left over from our ones coloumn.

Next week, we will finish our multiplication and division topic by looking at efficient ways to multiply.

They will use these facts to create their own Viking quest next week.

We concluded our story on Varmints by reflecting on the story and answering key questions about its themes and messages. We put ourselves in the gardener’s shoes, considering their thoughts, feelings, and motivations, and discussed how we would have wanted the story to end. This helped us develop a deeper understanding of the characters and the decisions they made.

Following this, we began exploring the features of an explanation text. We identified key structural elements, such as introductions, sequential steps, and technical vocabulary, and discussed why these features are important for clear and effective explanations. We then worked collaboratively to mind-map our own explanation texts, carefully planning our ideas and structuring our writing.

To ensure success, we created a clear set of Steps to Success, outlining what makes an effective explanation.

Finally, we used all of this preparation to write our introduction, focusing on engaging the reader and clearly introducing the topic we will be explaining.

This week in English, we focused on drafting each paragraph of our explanation text about the plant life cycle. Each paragraph builds on our understanding of how plants grow and why the process is important:

• Introduction – We explored what a life cycle is and why it plays a crucial role in nature.

• Germination – We described the first stage, explaining how a seed begins to sprout when given the right conditions.

• Growth – We detailed how the plant develops leaves, stems, and roots, using nutrients from the soil and sunlight to grow.

• Pollination and Reproduction – We examined how flowers produce seeds, ensuring new plants can grow.

• Conclusion – We reflected on why plants are essential for the environment and how the cycle continues.

As part of our environmental focus, we also wrote about the actions our class has taken to support sustainability. This included planting our own seeds and discussing how this small action contributes to a healthier planet. On a wider scale, as a school, we took part in the Winter Fair planting initiative and attended the Green Assembly to learn more about sustainability efforts.

We are now in the final stages of editing and improving our writing, ensuring our explanations are clear, detailed, and well-structured

This week, we have been focusing on editing and paragraph building, ensuring our writing is clear, detailed, and well-structured. The children have been using a conjunctions menu to extend their sentences, adding explanations and cause-and-effect relationships. They have also worked on improving their grammar, punctuation, and word choices by self-editing and peer-editing their work.

Now, we are in the final stage—publishing our plant life cycle explanations! 🌿🌸 The students have carefully structured their writing into well-organized paragraphs, using topic sentences, expanded noun phrases, and scientific vocabulary such as germination, nutrients, pollination, and photosynthesis. They have also practiced using modal verbs (e.g., must, could, should) to describe the conditions needed for plants to grow successfully.

It has been fantastic to see their confidence develop as they refine their writing with careful word choices and varied sentence structures. I can’t wait to display their final published work! 🌟

We also investigated perimeter, using addition and multiplication strategies to calculate the total distance around different shapes. To deepen their understanding, students worked on real-world word problems, applying their knowledge to measure and compare distances.

Throughout the lessons, they used reasoning skills to explain their answers and worked with partners to check their calculations.

Following this, the children focused on electrical safety, learning key rules for staying safe around electricity and why vigilance is essential when handling electrical appliances. They discussed potential hazards and ways to prevent accidents, reinforcing the importance of responsible electricity use at home and in school.

We then put ourselves in his shoes, imagining we were Shackleton himself, tasked with choosing the best candidates for the journey. We carefully considered the qualities needed to survive in extreme conditions, such as resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving. Through discussion and role-play, we debated which skills were most valuable and justified our choices, thinking about how these individuals would contribute to the success of the expedition.

This activity helped us understand the challenges Shackleton faced as a leader and how important it was to build a strong, reliable team.

We have also worked on converting between centimeters and meters, a useful skill that helped us as we moved on to calculating the perimeter of rectangles. We now understand that the perimeter is the total distance around a shape, and we’ve been practicing how to find it using addition and multiplication.

Taking our learning further, we explored rectilinear shapes. We identified their key features and used our knowledge of opposite and adjacent sides to find missing lengths. With this information, we were able to calculate the perimeter of more complex shapes, using problem-solving and logical thinking.

It has been a fantastic week of learning, with plenty of discussion and problem-solving challenges! We are becoming more confident in our measurement skills and are excited to keep building on this knowledge.

Balint - This week, Balint has displayed a fantastic attitude in class. He has been keen to contribute to lessons and had displayed a growth mindset when challenging himself to produce his very best work. Keep it up Balint!

Next, we focused on improving our sentence structure by incorporating conjunctions to extend and connect our ideas effectively. This helped us create more detailed and flowing narratives.

Building on this, we explored a letter written by a crew member, analyzing its structure and purpose. We identified key features such as formal tone, first-person perspective, and emotive language. We also examined expanded noun phrases to add depth to descriptions, modal verbs to convey possibility and necessity, and the overall format of a well-written letter.

This journey through different writing styles gave us a deeper understanding of how Shackleton’s crew documented their experiences and allowed us to develop our own writing skills.

Ali has worked hard to improve his writing and maths skills, showing confidence and curiosity. His positive attitude and kindness make him a wonderful role model.

We started by:
🔹 Reading and analyzing key events to understand what happened.
🔹 Summarizing each section in our own words, making sure we included important details.
🔹 Using ambitious vocabulary to make our writing more engaging.
🔹 Editing and improving our drafts by checking spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

One of the most interesting parts was learning about Shackleton’s journey and how his crew survived on Elephant Island. We discussed the challenges they faced, like the freezing temperatures and lack of food, and how Shackleton’s leadership helped them stay hopeful.

Bravo to Isabella, Shaikha and Mila for another week of superb effort and kindness.

Bella wrote a super introduction to a newspaper report drawing on a variety of different grammar features and technique. Mila did not get frustrated when her circuit failed to work in science and persevered, systematically testing the different components. Shaikha has shown wonderful kindness to her classmates and given 100% to every task and lesson this week.

Well done girls and 3B for another fun filled, fantastic week of learning and effort.

A huge congratulations to Sofia for always trying her best to be the very best she can be! She has shown great resilience in times of struggle, which has led to fantastic progress—well done, Sofia!

Well done to Khaled Humaid for his maturity and dedication. Not only does he excel in his own learning, but he also encourages others to do the same. He is an excellent role model for 3A, and we are so proud of him!

The students compared the monthly average amount of daylight hours the polar regions receive with that of the UAE and used their locational knowledge, the hemispheres and key lines of latitude to make suggestions as to why the number of daylight hours in the UAE was less varied over the course of a year than in the Arctic and Antarctic. They students also observed and discussed why in June the Arctic has near 24 hours of daylight, the Antarctic has 0 hours and why that is reversed in December.

We also examined the moral of the story, discussing Shackleton’s leadership, perseverance, and teamwork in the face of adversity. In our reflective conclusions, we considered the impact of the journey on the crew and what we can learn from their resilience.

By the end of the week, we had fully developed newspaper reports that captured the emotions, struggles, and triumphs of Shackleton and his crew. Well done, everyone! 🎉

This week, we kicked off our new science unit by diving into the exciting world of States of Matter.

The children explored the three main states – solids, liquids, and gases – and learned how the molecules in each state behave differently. To help them understand this in a fun, hands-on way, the class took on the role of molecules themselves!

• As solids, they stood close together, vibrating in place.

• As liquids, they moved around slowly, bouncing off each other with a little more space in between.

• As gases, they zoomed around freely with lots of space, showing how fast and spread out gas molecules can be!

We then looked at everyday objects and identified which state of matter they belonged to. The class also had a first look at changing states, using water, ice, and steam as examples of how matter can shift from one form to another.

A great start to our new unit – the children were full of energy and curiosity!

To extend our understanding, we also compared fractions using the symbols <, >, and =, practising how to justify our reasoning and explain which fractions are greater or smaller. The children showed fantastic progress in working with fractions in a real-life context, and it’s been lovely to see their growing confidence!

✨Yaroslav - This week, Yaroslav has displayed and kind and helpful attitude towards others in the class, helping his peers with their work and being a great role model. This week, our young scientists got hands-on with a messy and marvellous experiment—Oobleck! 🧫

The children loved exploring this fascinating substance, which behaves like both a solid and a liquid. It was the perfect way to bring our States of Matter unit to life and see science in action!

Through play and observation, we discussed how materials can change depending on how they’re handled, reinforcing key concepts from our lessons on solids, liquids, and gases. 🤖

To top it all off, the class did brilliantly in their end-of-unit quiz and tackled the assessment challenge task with great focus and enthusiasm. Their hard work and understanding really shone through—well done, everyone! 🌟

The children showed great perseverance when working through multi-step problems and began to apply their time knowledge in real-life contexts.

What an exciting and meaningful week of science learning during Environment Week! Our students explored real-world environmental issues and engaged in creative, hands-on activities to deepen their understanding of our planet. Here's what we got up to:

🌱 Mother Earth Monday
We began the week with a virtual tour of a nature park in Abu Dhabi. The children explored different environments and then created informative Google Slides to present what they discovered about the UAE’s natural habitats.

💡 Turn It Off Tuesday
Students focused on energy conservation, tracking electricity use at home using a digital tally chart. They reflected on small changes they could make to help reduce their carbon footprint.

💧 Water Wednesday
The children created their very own water cycle in a bag and began observing the evaporation and condensation processes daily. A simple but powerful way to see science in action!

🌳 Thriving Trees Thursday
We explored UAE tree species, practising tree identification and learning about native flora and their importance to desert ecosystems.

🌊 Marine Life Friday
We wrapped up the week by researching marine animals and completing a creative project. Each class used a different medium to create their own stingray models, linking to our focus on pollution and marine conservation.

Our students showed curiosity, creativity, and real environmental awareness this week — a big well done to everyone!

Noah - This week, Noah has shown his maturity in the classroom and displayed a positive attitude towards his learning. Always keen to contribute to lessons, Noah brings a lovely energy to 3C every day. Well done Noah!

Ibrahim - Ibrahim has worked hard to settle into 3C and has made great progress in forming new friendships. He is showing more confidence each day and it’s been lovely to see him becoming more comfortable. Keep it up Ibrahim!

The children have linked this to their Topic and Maths lessons; discovering how the cable was laid, how the telegraph system worked, the role of Sham Island and the British Empire as one of the six factors that helped to create the Industrial Revolution. The children have been calculating how much cable was needed, writing a telegram and how much it would cost to send per letter. They will continue to look at Morse Code and how the messages were transmitted.

This week in Science, the children have been exploring how they can positively influence their environment — and they’ve done a brilliant job!

We’ve been learning about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling to help protect our planet. The class also conducted a litter survey around our school grounds, collecting real data on the types and amount of litter found. 🗑️♻️

They then used this data to create bar graphs to clearly show their findings — and worked together to analyse and draw conclusions about the impact of litter in our local environment. 📊

The children have been encouraged to continue this awareness at home and around their local area by keeping an eye out for litter and thinking about how they can make small changes that lead to a big difference!

🏆 Dan – Our maths genius this week! Dan has been working so hard on her times tables — even without being asked. What a wonderful example of dedication and independence! 💪🧠

🏆 Carter – A true star for showing such resilience and adapting to change with such a positive attitude. He’s worked incredibly hard and is producing work of a very high standard. Well done, Carter! 🌟📚

Hamza showed super leadership and maturity in our assembly and singing practices as well as making a joyously wonderful sock puppet today.

Victoria is always polite and courteous and several teachers have noted this during our practices this week.

Mila has made all her teachers chuckle with a humorous non-fiction piece of writing welcoming Grade 2 up to Grade 3. She contained all the key features of non-fiction writing too.

1. Adding and Subtracting 1's, 10's, 100's, and 1000's – Students practiced adding and subtracting these values to develop confidence in manipulating larger numbers in a structured way.

2. Adding 4-Digit Numbers Using the Formal Column Method – The students learned to use the formal column addition method for 4-digit numbers. This week’s focus was on calculations without regrouping (where digits in each column add up to less than 10).

   After the midterm break, the focus will shift to further developing these skills with regrouping and more complex problems. Thank you for your continued support at home!

1. Efficient Subtraction Strategies:
   We reviewed various methods for subtracting larger numbers in a way that’s both accurate and efficient. The children practiced using these strategies to simplify subtraction with larger numbers, reinforcing their problem-solving skills.

2. Checking Strategies Using Addition and Subtraction:
   Students learned techniques for checking their answers, including using the inverse operation. For example, after subtracting, they could add the difference back to one of the original numbers to verify the result. This approach helps build confidence in their answers and deepens their understanding of how addition and subtraction are related.

Next Week’s Focus:
We’ll start exploring area, concentrating on counting centimeter squares to measure space accurately. This will introduce students to the concept of area measurement, preparing them for more complex geometry topics in the future.

   We introduced the concept of area as the amount of space a shape covers. Students learned that we measure area by counting units of space, specifically square units.

2. Counting Squares
   Next, we practiced counting centimeter squares to measure area. This step helps children see how area is calculated by filling a shape with equal-sized squares and counting them to find the total area.

3. Making Shapes
   Students then created their own shapes using squares, reinforcing the idea that area can be found by counting squares regardless of the shape's layout.

4. Comparing Areas
   Finally, we compared the areas of different shapes by counting and comparing the number of squares. This gave students a practical way to understand which shapes take up more or less space.

How You Can Help at Home:
Encourage your child to measure the area of simple objects at home using square units (like square tiles, sticky notes, or grid paper). This hands-on practice can make the concept of area more relatable and reinforce what they’ve learned in class.

🔹 Comparing decimals – Children used place value charts and number lines to decide which decimal is greater or smaller, building confidence in reasoning and mathematical vocabulary.
🔹 Rounding decimals – Pupils practised rounding to the nearest whole number using visual models and number lines, thinking carefully about place value and estimating.
🔹 Writing decimals as halves and quarters – We made meaningful links between fractions and decimals, helping children to convert between the two with accuracy. Many used pictorial representations and real-life examples to deepen their understanding.
