I believe that paid parental leave for 6 months or more for after a child is born and also days of paid leave for when children are ill should be protected by law and should be available to parents who are not part of the formal employment sector. Women (largely) bear the brunt of child care and their ability to earn an income and to provide for themselves and their families suffer when they have babies. This widens the wage gap and negatively impacts the agency of women and other people who care for young children

I think there is a large discrepancy in how we see sexuality in different people and how we treat people based on how they express their sexuality, from the idea that sexually active women are sluts, but sexually active men are studs to the idea that gay men are promiscuous and marriage is the only way you can "validly" engage in sex. I think sexual justice would involve putting all forms of sexual expression between consenting adults on a level playing field and not criminalising, persecuting or discriminating against any adults based on how they engage in sexual relationships.

I feel that a huge part of being able to effectively and agentically navigate sexual rights rests upon the ability to access them in various ways. One of the primary ways in which we encounter sexual rights for instance is through our basic knowledge(s) and understanding of bodies, boundaries, agency, safety, relationships and sexualities. Without this, we are deprived of the opportunity to really be agents and to explore pleasure, consent, intimacy and identities in ways that are sensitive to our multiple and complex lived realities.

I believe that sexual justice is to empower womxn to understand that it is loving to claim their right to the power to consent. In the face of being called a bitch, nasty, mean and catty, men claim ownership over women's bodies in nice ways that simply don't overtly communicate violence. The violence is experienced in these manoeuvres for domination are, which make setting boundaries impossible. If "nice", composed masculinities are not seen as violent. If womxn cannot put violence in its place, especially if it is a boundary crossing or a non-consensual relationship, we do not have a sexually just society. Sexual justice is educating womxn and feminists of all genders to encourage and affirm anyone who stands up to the violation of consent, boundaries and personal autonomy. This is deafeningly silent in society. You hear of the scourge of "nice guys" but not what to do about it and the pervasiveness of submission to violence when it is "just someone trying to be nice".

For me, sexual Justice can be such a complex and layered concept which can be overwhelming at times to makes sense of which is exactly why I am really looking forward to the WAS satellite session on this fascinating topic. I try to make sense of sexual justice from my own experiences as a cis-gender gay man growing up in 1980's and 1990's England, whereby when I look back it felt sexual justice was a far away idea as it was being eroded almost daily. These were dark days indeed; the fear of contracting HIV through seeking something as natural as sexual pleasure was terrifying, this was in the early days when there were very limited treatment options at the time and massive stigma and homophobia! A low point in human rights generally and sexual rights in particular was a lot to deal with growing up queer. Having grown up in Thatcher's Britain the conservative government's hostility towards LGBTI+ and those living with HIV swayed public opinion regarding sexual and gender justice and it was scary to accept that I may be gay. For me this was yet another factor to deal with at the time of coming to terms with my sexuality. As a teenager and young adult I remember clearly Operation Spanner and took part in the Operation Spanner Trial protest in central London whilst a student in November 1992 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Spanner
Having moved to South Africa post-1994 whereby our constitution includes sexual and reproductive rights being protected, on paper in any case. Which is wonderful, and I can't help think of how far we have come in a relatively short space in time but also how much work still needs to happen before full sexual justice for all is achieved. This is why satellite sessions such as this are vitally important.

Equality to me will only be possible once conversations about how my sex impacts my day-to-day is not just reserved for same sex friends and allies, or big splashy sponsored drives. Conversations about how partner, sexual and other violence disproportionately affects women, the implications of cultural sexism because of my gender, and navigating intersectionality in South Africa need to be normalized to the point where there is no stigma attached to questioning them. Only once everyone is informed and free to question gender and sex norms we accept can equality be reached, and only with equality will there ever be meaningful movement towards sexual justice for all.

For young teens and women to have education on and access to sexual healthcare. We get to experience pleasure in so many facets in our lives - from eating delicious food to seeing our children play. And yet sexual pleasure is taboo, forbidden, shut down, or shamed in far too many contexts. We need to promote sexual pleasure as one's right, one's own responsibility and something we are all allowed to experienced!

The adult sex work (Prostitution) laws in South Africa are exceedingly outdated, still running and referencing the Sexual Offenses Act 23 of 1957. By making prostitution legal in South Africa, we could eliminate the illegal elements; such as the pimps who traffic girls as well as the under aged girls/drug addicted girls. With it legal, you can run it as if you are a contractor, with a business license, fingerprinted, photographed, with a bank account and clear criminal record. Currently the illegal industry only provides for the pimps and traffickers exploiting the girls / gents. Make it a legal industry and everything changes.
