Stop + infinitive
Stop followed by ing is used when you stop doing an activity, for example: I stopped smoking 3 years ago = I stopped or stopped smoking three years ago. However, stop with to infinitive is to stop doing something to do something else, and this "to do something else" will be the sentence of to infinitive.
