Poland was unprepared for the attack and fell in the war<br><br>Significance/Outcome: Germany and the Soviet Union gained some Polish land after annexation.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Germany &amp; Italy vs France<br><br>Description: After Britain and France declared war on Germany for invading Poland, Germany invaded France. France was unprepared for the attack and retreated. This allowed Hitler to push all the way to Paris. Mussolini took the distraction as a chance to get land back from France.<br><br>Significance/Outcome: Germany eventually captured Paris on June 14, 1940. Italy also occupied some land in France.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Battle of Britain (&quot;The Blitz&quot;) (July, 1940)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Germany vs Britain<br><br>Description: The war was a battle between the Luftwaffe air forces (Germany) and the Royal air forces (Britain). The Luftwaffe outnumbered the Royal Air forces, but Britain retaliated by bombing Berlin. Hitler made plans to bomb Liverpool and London, but couldn't keep up with Britain's advanced technology.<br><br>Significance/Outcome: Britain won the war due a variety of factors such as advanced technology (they had radars that were able to track Luftwaffe forces) and motivation to defend their home country. Significant loss of lives from both sides of the war. Hitler called off his plans to attack Britain as the Luftwaffe was serverly weakened.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Allies (USA, Britain, France, Soviet Union) vs Axis Powers (Germany and Italy)<br><br>Description: Several wars occurred during this event known as the Battle of Gazala, Battle of Tobruk, and Battle of El Alamein. The war was mostly fought for European control over North Africa. The Axis powers were successful in the start, but were later defeated by the Allies due to underlying tactics.<br><br>Significance/Outcome: First major event the Allies won against the Axis powers. Axis powers were prevented from gaining control over northern Africa.</div>]]></description>

They dropped a second atomic bomb that resulted in around 40,000 - 70,000 deaths.&nbsp;<br><br>Significance/Outcome: WWII officially came to and end after Japan surrendered.</div>]]></description>

This officially brought the United States into WW2.</div>]]></description>

Many lives were lost on both sides of the battle, but the Allies were able to push Germany back. After Germany's unsuccessful counterattack, the Allies rapidly pushed into Paris forcing the Germans to retreat.<br><br>Significance/Outcome: Paris was liberated by the Allies (Canda, USA, and Britain).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Germany vs Soviet Union<br><br>Description:&nbsp;As Germany advanced into the Soviet Union (from Operation Barbarossa), they attacked Stalingrad to gain control of the Caucasus region. As Germany suffered from lack of supplies and winter weather, the Soviet Union launched counter attacks and forced Germany to retreat.<br><br>Significance/Outcome: This battle was a win for the Soviet Union and also took back land occupied by Germany.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Japan vs USA and Australia<br><br>Description:&nbsp;Japan attacked Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and were intercepted by the allies of the USA and Australia at the Coral Sea. <br><br>Significance/Outcome: Both sides took lots of damage. This was a victory for the Allies of the USA and Australia as they prevented Japan from invading Papua New Guinea. The USS Lexington was sunk and the USS Yorktown was damaged. Japan was forced to retreat due to many losses of lives and air crafts. </div>]]></description>

Both sides suffered loss of lives and damages. <br><br>Significance/Outcome: Japan lost their islands to the Allies. The islands provided space to build military bases for attacks against Japan in the future.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Combatants: Japans vs USA<br><br>Description:&nbsp;Japan attacked Midway Island which the United States used as a military base. Japan launched a series of attacks and at the same time were met by American air forces that attacked their fleets causing heavy damage. Japan lost many ships and aircraft while the United States lost one aircraft. <br><br>Significance/Outcome: Japan was forced to retreat due to damages leading to the win of the United States. This was like a revenge battle for the United States after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.</div>]]></description>

Germany was initially successful with their attack and pushed far into the Soviet Union, but the harsh winter weakened the German army. <br><br>Significance/Outcome: Germany was unable to defeat the Soviet Union due to harsh weather. The Soviet Union was able to retaliate though the Battle of Stalingrad.</div>]]></description>
