Song - Working Man's Ph.D. by Aaron Tippin

Aaron Tippin's song "Working Man's Ph.D." parallels Emerson's essay through its ideals of, as an individual, you have to work hard to accomplish the things you want. In his song, Tippin sings, "With your heart and your hands and the sweat on your brow, you build the things that really make the world go 'round." This lyric compares to Emerson's claims of one's satisfaction with themselves comes through "his toil" and work, not the work of others.

Fictional Character - Princess Tiana (from Disney's The Princess and the Frog)

Princess Tiana is an excellent example of a fictional character who demonstrates Self-Reliance. She lives by herself, and works two jobs in order to save up for her own restaurant. She doesn't accept help from outsiders, and is a firm believer of working hard until your dreams are achieved. Like Emerson's words, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself" Tiana works tirelessly in order to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a business woman and owning a restaurant. She doesn't indulge in other personal pleasures like vacation, socializing with friends, and through much of the film, doesn't even consider romance.

Misunderstood Thinker - Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh can greatly be a misunderstood thinker in his time. During his years, he wasn't a popular artist and was known to be insane. He ate paint, cut off his ear and gave it to a woman, had mental illnesses, and was sent to asylums. Despite his rejection in the later half of the 19th century, Van Gogh is arguably one of the most well known artists today. He was the painter of Starry Night (pictured above), as well as the popular Bedroom in Arles, and other famous art works, all featuring his unique artistic styles and methods.

Chris McCandless greatly embodies the principles represented in Emerson's essay. McCandless was noted to reject money and supplies from strangers, finding excitement in the complete independence and daily challenge of survival. He pushed himself to the limit, living by Emerson's principle of not knowing his limits "until he has tried." McCandless also matched with Emerson's principle of peace only coming from "yourself" as he relied on these independent survival expeditions in order to feel satisfied with himself.
