What is meant by the term RISK and HAZARD?

A RISK is something that holds potential danger, something we are aware of and often prevent by taking precautions. A HARZARD is similar to that of a risk, however it is something that will cause harm and must be avoided at all times.

1) Stray chairs among the sewing machines and around the desks. This allows people to trip up especially within busy, crowded workshops. They could be holding shears which can do greater damage than expected.
2) On the topic of fabric shears, when walking with them, always point them down towards your toes and do not run in and around the workshop with scissors in hand. This is a risk to everyone.
3) Scattered bags on the floor can also trip people up, especially if they're rushing. Its best to put them in the lockers or tucked in underneath the tables along with the chairs if you are able to.
4) Food and drink in the workshop is a risk to the garments as you would not want the cloths to get dirty and ruined. Always stay within the kitchen area or the cafeteria if you are eating inside the building.
5) Regarding the over-lockers, its best to let some warm up as if they are used immediately, it burns through the oil and releases a pungent smell. When finished, turn them off but step on the pedal to let them power down, as they can harm anyone who might lean against the stage and damage their fingers.

1) Pressing - Scalding from steam, be sure the iron is against the garment when pressing for steam.
2) Burns from hot beds, just be careful about how you use them. They often come with cooling systems, so after use, cool them down for the next person.
3) Cramps from overworking. When working hard, tailors will often get neck cricks and will need to take a break to re-energize for continually good work. A way to prevent the back pains is to use a chair with a cushioned back but still straight; good for back alignment and preventing hunchbacks.
4) Finger injuries when using the sewing machines. Just wear the thimbles to protect your fingertips. They can be used during hand-sewing too.
5) When using the machines in low-lighting, always turn on the lamp to see what you are doing, so you make no mistakes and don't hurt yourselves.

SWP is a procedure made for carrying out specific tasks that ensures workers' exposure to hazardous situations, substances and physical agents, is controlled as it is essential to guarantee the safety of the students/workers. Not only does this encourage a better work environment, but it appeals to more people who might be interested in a secure and safe employment.
If you were to discover any faulty or damaged equipment in the workshop, report to a member of staff or someone who does know about the equipment and knows how to fix it.
If you are injured within the workshop, seek out a member of staff unless you are fully capable of helping yourself to the minor injury. Otherwise, please ask someone who does know what they are doing to help you.
These are examples of easily accessed safety equipment and signs around the classroom, showing that the school does take good care of the pupils and staff here. There are multiple exit signs and extinguishers.

This is to ensure that the machine is working as it should, giving the opportunity for any mistakes to be noticed.
- if it isn't working as it should be. ask someone, who can identify the problems, for help. You can learn along the way.

OVERLOCKERS
- Same with the sewing machines: turn on after it is threaded up.
- Power down, if it runs on oil, so that when it is turned off it doesn't use the remaining "juice" and hurt someone who might be leaning against it.
- Be careful of the blade on the side that cuts off the excess.
