I build relationships with my students by talking to them, asking questions of them, and REALLY trying to listen to them. I smile and make them laugh a lot by being silly. I give the best hugs --lots of the them.. especially when I know they need them. I know these things are working because the kids love being in school, try everything I ask of them, and let me know when they need or want something from me. They show me compassion, respect, and love.

Having my students understand that I am also human and can relate with some of their experiences has helped me find success. I know it’s working because of the positive relationships I have seen in my classroom. I’ve seen my students mimic my behaviors and carry them in their relationships with their peers.
