The Specialist block was very challenging for EC students students this year. Unless they had PE for Specialist it was very difficult to teach any content right after. Many times we found ourselves having to give them 10 min of outside play time in order to settle them down for the content block after specialists. It was also very challenging for them engage in content at the very end of the day. So our learning felt choppy after specialist unless they had PE that day and got lots of running and movement. As a former Upper teacher I did feel like having Specialist right before/after lunch worked well. Not sure what year that was. We often spent the afternoons engaging in inquiry/project work and that worked nicely. It was my favorite part of the day with Upper students because it felt more like a workshop and we can tie up loose ends on work with students and conference more deeply. Just a thought.

Scheduling specialists for EC students at the end of the day is more developmentally appropriate. These young learners often have the most focus and energy during the morning hours, which should be reserved for core classroom activities that build foundational skills.

By contrast, specialist classes—while important—are generally more active, hands-on, and flexible, making them better suited for the late afternoon when four-year-olds are starting to feel tired. These types of activities are more likely to keep them engaged, even as their stamina fades.

Upper elementary students, on the other hand, are preparing for middle school, where they’ll be expected to handle academic subjects throughout the entire day. Having specialists in the morning while their energy is highest may not support the development of the stamina they’ll need moving forward.

If it feels difficult to keep older students engaged in the afternoon, imagine how much more challenging it is for a four-year-old. Giving EC students specialists at the end of the day honors their developmental needs and supports a more effective learning environment for all.

The morning specialists time is extremely challenging for EC students, particularly EC 1. It is very confusing and stressful for our youngest students to have so many transitions and rotations at the beginning of the day, especially at the start of the year. Having Specialists later in the day would allow more predictable routines, support smoother transitions (especially for our nuerodiverse students), and maximize learning for all students . It would also allow more time for teachers to focus on supporting children having extreme separation anxiety at the beginning of the year. Some children were very overwhelmed by the specialist rotations happening early in the day and were stressed having to separate from parents and then from a their classroom teachers soon after.
