After Mexico lost the Mexican War with America, they had to give up most of their land, which includes California and New Mexico territories. This was an issue for sectionalism because these new states would be admitted as slave states, against the Northerners' wishes.

Free Soil Party (1848)

A short-lived political party which was largely focused on opposing the expansion of slavery into the Western territories, before merging with the Republican Party. This was an issue for sectionalism because there had been an entire political party dedicated to creating issues with slavery and the new land.

Election of Zachary Taylor (1848)

The 16th presidential election, after the Mexican-American war and it's Treaty of Guadalope-Hidalgo. Taylor defeated Martin Van Buren and when he took office, he opposed adding more slave states with this new land, which added on to the growing sectionalism in the nation.

Compromise of 1850 (1850)

This compromise included the Fugitive Slave Act and admitted California as a free state, but made it so that new states that were to join could decide for themselves whether to allow slavery or not. This could potentially cause more sectionalism between the North and South because they would eventually be an imbalance between free and slave states in congress.

Fugitive Slave Act (1850)

Part of the Compromise of 1850, this act made it so that slaves that fled to a free state could be sent back into slavery and any person could turn them in. All someone has to do is swear in that that person was a slave and they would be sent back. The North disliked the new Fugitive Slave Act because it basically meant that no slave was safe in the United States and further divided them from the South.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852)

This novel was written about the struggles of slaves in the South and how slave families survived when parts of those families were sold into slavery. This book encouraged poeple to speak out against slavery and further increased sectionalism between the North and the South.

Election of Franklin Pierce (1852)

The 17th presidential election, Democrat Pierce defeated Whig General Winfield Scott by a massive number of votes. This was the last election to include the Whig party because of the growing sectionalism between the North and South. This gap was caused by differences in ideas on slavery for their regions.

Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

This act passed by Congress repealed the Missouri Compromise, created Kansas and Nebraska, and allowed for popular soverignty within every state. Repealing the Missouri Compromise meant that the number of slave states could increase along with sectionalism.

This party began it's journey by combatting the Kansas Nebraska Act and slavery's expansion. Original members included Northern Protestants, factory workers, and prosperous farmers. Another reason why sectionalism was such a growing issue because of an entire political party emerging from this division.

Bleeding Kansas (1854)

Bleeding Kansas was a series of small, unorganized violence that happened in the Kansas territory and the Missouri territory. It consisted of pro-slavery groups and anti-slavery groups constantly fighting and attacking the other groups. This contributed to sectionalism a great deal because of the rivalries between the two opposing sides constantly getting bigger, therefore, dividing the people.

Caning of Senator Sumner (1856)

This was when a pro-slavery democrat, Preston Brooks, brutaly attacked Charles Sumner, a abolitionist republican, with a walking cane. After this event Charles Sumner was not in the senate for the next four years due to injury. This shows sectionalism that help leads to the civil war because it sets an example for the people that there is a willingness to resort to violence.

Election of James Buchanan (1856)

James Buchanan was elected in a three-way election. He was from the democrat Party. The republican candidate was John C. Fremont and the Know Nothing party candidate was Millard Fillmore. This brought in new political parties which caused more division.

Dred Scott vs. Sandford (1857)

This was a court case that ruled that African Americans were not United States citizens. This meant that they could not be allowed the rights that the constitution granted Americans. This caused a growth in sectionalism and made abolitionists outraged.

Lecompton Constitution (1858)

It was a document made in LeCompton Kansas, which was the territorial capital at the time by pro-slavery southerners. It advocated for slavery and made a new bill of rights that excluded black americans from any rights. This created even more divides over slavery and new territories.

John Brown’s Raid (1859)

It was an uprising in harpers ferry where the goal was to create war on slavery. Another intent of it was to start a sleve revolt and have a ton of slaves escape. Many southern people saw it as a scheme from the north to directly attack the south.

Election of Abraham Lincoln (1860)

President Lincoln won the presidential election with less than a 40 percent popular vote nationwide. He won this from northern states and states far west like California and Oregon. He did not win over a single state from the south. This led to sectionalism because of his anti-slavery expansion campaign.

After the election of Abraham Lincoln, south carolina became the first state to sedeed from the union because of their dislike for his anti-slavery. This came as the result of all the previous actions against slavery.

Crittenden Compromise (1860)

It was an unsuccesful proposal to make it so forbid the abolition of slavery in slave states and to compensate slave owners for runaways and other things like that. They wanted to make it unconstitutional to ban slavery. This eventually led to the civil war because it just lengthened the gap between pro slavery and abolitionists.
