Bridget the Witch

The first accused witch was named Bridget Bishop. She had been seen practicing witchery in her house, and was immediately prosecuted. Doc. C states, "As soon as she came near, all (the afflicted girls) fell into fits...." In this document, Bridget Bishop was being inquired by an examiner. The afflicted girls were acting as though they were being tortured by her very presence. The town of Salem was susceptible to this, because they had no other reason to believe that they weren't witches. Document C states, "(Examiner) They say you bewitched your first husband to death.... She shook her head, and the afflicted were tortured."

The "Afflicted Children" were supposedly being tortured by the devil himself. He was torturing them through the bodies of "witches". This is what the gullible towns people thought when they first heard the news. However, according to Doc. D, a 19th century historian says that the children were acting. They would accuse people who they did not particularly get along with, or had a quarrel in the past. As soon as a person was accused, the towns people would immediately throw them in jail, and if they confessed they were witches they were spared. Although, those who didn't were hanged at monthly intervals. According to Doc. D, "They soon... became intoxicated...by the terrible success of their imposture (acting), and were swept along a frenzy they had occasioned...."

Witches Were Accused Because they Were growing in Wealth and Political Power.

According to Doc E, before the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria, between 1661 and 1681, people in the Eastern Half of the village were slowly increasing in political power and wealth, while as the Western half was decreasing. The reason that a lot of the defenders protected the accused was because they knew each other well. The accusers were far away from their witches, so any suspicious actions were thought of as witchcraft. This was one of the main problems/issues with why the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria was caused and acted upon.

The Salem Witch Trial Hysteria was a gruesome event in which people were hanged and pressed to death. Over 100 people were accused as witches. The people of Salem grew very suspicious of their neighbors after someone convinced others that Bridget Bishop was being controlled by the devil. However, this was nonsense, and the accusations were false. The "actors", who accused her continued to prosecute helpless victims. They were eventually caught when they attacked the mayors wife.

According to Doc B, the accused people were mostly female, around age 40 and married. The accusers were female, not married, and average about 20. This proves that the another cause of the Salem Witch Trials could be because of jealousy or age for marriage.
