Technology is a useful tool in education when it is used as an empowering, engaging, and interactive with interaction. Technology can be used as a hands-on activity that promotes participation, dialogue, and engagement. However, teachers need to find the balance between using technology apps and non technology activities to promote engagement, interaction, and empowerment of students.

Gaps - By Kevin L.

Technology is a useful tool for education when use correctly with the gaps in mind. Teachers must consider the income gap (and if all students have access), the open gap (is the app going to be open ended, or only to help them memorize facts), the achievement gap (will the app be useful to all levels of students & teachers) and the participation gap (who's going to be participating, who's going to be learning). When building or choosing an app we need to think about out audience, all of them, and move forward only if we close all the gaps.

I really liked all the quotes by Fred Rogers, especially the one about how technology cannot, and should not, replace the "risk or joy of giving and receiving a hug". I also learned quite a lot about how critical it is for me as a teacher to use intentionality within the framework of DAP when using anything, including technology in my classroom. WHY and I doing what I am doing. I must know this.

Taylor W. I believe that Fred Rogers had a lot of beneficial and crucial thoughts and details on how technology can and should be used with children. My favorite quote from Rogers is when he said, "it has to make a difference to all children" and included how technology should be a learning device not a teaching device. It's so important to know why and how to use the device where it can be a learning tool for the child, rather than giving the students the technology as a playing tool or teaching tool.

I've mixed feelings about this, technology and young children...in looking at NAEYC's statement (published in 2012) their stance particularly in regard to passive, non-interactive participation makes sense. The reference section is relatively extensive, as well. Here's a link:
