Here in Monterey County there are many opportunities for educators to grow. For instance, I currently work for the Monterey County Office of Education in Salinas. Our program offers several professional growth workshops. An example is, our program works really close with First 5 and they offer a training for teachers called the Teaching Pyramid. The teaching pyramid guides educators on how to build positive relationships with children who need more support in the classrooms.Of course there are more opportunities for teachers to grow in the field of Early Childhood Education (ECE), however this is one that really makes a difference for families, teachers and children.

At least one person in the family are immigrants. Most families come here to work in Salinas because this community is very popular for agriculture. According to kidsdata.org, Monterey County has a 27.7% of children who don't speak English in their homes. Multiple languages have become introduced more into this county as we have families coming from different parts of the world living here due to work.

California has very high standards when it comes to meeting the needs for the children. For instance, based on federal legislation there is a high demand for achieving higher standards for many Early Childhood Programs. I am aware that our program as well as many other programs, have assessments that must be completed by a certain time frame. We call those DRDP's. These help the teachers understand where the strengths and weaknesses are for the children. We are also able to spot the cognitive and language development too. These tools help the teachers to be able to help the parents and meet their child's needs.

Children families, and schools are under enormous pressure to achieve higher standards based on the federal legislation No Child Left Behind(NCLB). There is a significant and enduring achievement gap between middle-class children and low-income children, particularly low-income children from minority and non-English-speaking families. Recent national analysis studies and policy reports point out that this academic achievement gap is evident at kindergarten entry. Many researchers, educators, and policy makers view early education as an opportunity to equalize educational opportunities and decrease the achievement gap. Most states use a combination of federal, state and local funding to provide targeted early learning opportunities for children who meet certain eligibility requirements. Children from low-income homes and those who are learning English as a second language typically have highest priority for education services.

State department of Education are implementing early learning standards that promote the expectations for children to develop school readiness goals before they enter into kindergarten.I think that is a great expectation. At my school we focus on school readiness goals too. As a teacher I hope everything they learned at school they will be able to take it with them to kindergarten. For example, I enjoy hearing successful stories when children visit us and the parents tell us that other parents want to know what preschool they went to,because that child learned so much at preschool. Our book Getting it the Right way states Common Core Standards are needed as well. The purpose of these standards help to bring "a focus to the curriculum and guidance to teachers about what to teach and when to teach it."(Kagan, Kauerz & Tarrannt,2007)It is also noted that certain states show a set of language stantards.

I forgot what else is expected of them. last year I mom that her child was in the preschool with us , took a list of 13 things that the child needs to know before entering kindergarden. In November of 2016 proposition 58 was passed wich gives the parents the option to decide what the best for their childrens regarding with their language. In California especially there are a lot of dual language programs. in which a child learns more than one language and are fluent in both languages, one language does not replace the other.

I have notice that there is more students been enroll in preschool and have notice a higher demand on the all day programs. There is also resource Centers were parents could get information and they get referred to different programs were there child could engage where other children and parents are suppose to stay with them and they get to be involve with the activities for the child.

2. In the research i made i found out that most of the Monterey County population speak Spanish. 60% are Spanish speakers. This means that they're not a lot of English speakers or who there main language is English at home because we also have the percentages of the other persons who speak other languages other than english or Spanish.

3. In chapter one they talk about how State department of education design early learning standards that let us know the expectation of what young children should know and be able to do before Kinder. It talks about how many of the language like alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness are skills that are learn in the early childhood years and that it is important for later reading abilities. And i believe if preschool was a dll class it would help and benefit the child more.

1. I feel that in early childhood, that Sonoma County has an interest in Dual Language Learners. Personally, I have had a lot of language support in the classroom as well as been able to attend various training. One training in particular is called the TALKK program through the Sonoma Office of Education.
2. According to a Portrait of Sonoma county 62% of people do not speak English. It was more challenging to find statistics that directly relate to children specifically.
3. I feel that within the Early Childhood setting there has been a large push to supporting dual language leaners which has been really amazing too see. I begin to think about my time spent in elementary schools, and I have not seen as big of push. I think there is a need for elementary for children that may not of had access or an opportunity to attend preschool.
