In this scene, Scout and Jim visit the church that Calpurnia goes to(a church for people of color), and they do not approve saying that because Scout and Jim were white, they should go to their own church while throwing insults and racial slurs. This is the first time Scout and Jim have experienced racial discrimination directly towards themselves, so it shows an interesting perspective from Scout.

"I felt Calpurnia’s hand dig into my shoulder. “What you want, Lula?” she asked,
in tones I had never heard her use. She spoke quietly, contemptuously.
“I wants to know why you bringin‘ white chillun to nigger church.”
“They’s my comp’ny,” said Calpurnia. Again I thought her voice strange: she was
talking like the rest of them.
“Yeah, an‘ I reckon you’s comp’ny at the Finch house durin’ the week.”
A murmur ran through the crowd. “Don’t you fret,” Calpurnia whispered to me,
but the roses on her hat trembled indignantly.
When Lula came up the pathway toward us Calpurnia said, “Stop right there,
nigger.”
Lula stopped, but she said, “You ain’t got no business bringin‘ white chillun here
—they got their church, we got our’n. It is our church, ain’t it, Miss Cal?”
Calpurnia said, “It’s the same God, ain’t it?” " (Lee, Harper)

In this scene, Zeebo(Scout and Jim's garbage collector) goes against Lula and steps in to defend Scout and Jim even though they were of different color coming into their church. This shows that even though this time period was long ago, there are still some people who believe in equality who don't participate with racism.

"In her place was a solid mass of colored people.
One of them stepped from the crowd. It was Zeebo, the garbage collector. “Mister
Jem,” he said, “we’re mighty glad to have you all here. She’s a
troublemaker from way back, got fancy ideas an’ haughty ways—we’re mighty
glad to have you all.”
With that, Calpurnia led us to the church door where we were greeted by
Reverend Sykes, who led us to the front pew."

A report from 2010 made by Faith Communities today shows that religious communities now have changed drastically and are much more multiracial than from Scout and Jim's time period. According to study, more than 11,000 congregations found the number of multiracial faith communities that have nearly doubled in the past decade. "Nearly 14 percent of congregations are considered multiracial, with at least 20 percent of members coming from racial groups different from the congregation’s majority race. The study also found 4 percent of America’s congregations are multiracial, with no racial group having a majority."(Thuma, Scott)

This study shows how much racial diversity especially in congregations/churches have increased in the US compared to in TKAM, where races were separated and discriminated if interfered.

Although there has been a massive improvement in diverse congregations, there are still sources claiming racial discrimination against people of color especially in churches. For example, a Georgia Baptist church has been shut down after being accused of racism toward a local black congregation.

"The Southern Baptist Convention announced Monday that it was expelling Albany’s Raleigh White Baptist Church over “intentional discriminatory acts toward individuals based solely on the color of their skin.”

The original plan for the church was for both the white and black congregation to share the same building for a few months. However, after months, a conflict begin to rise. Marcus Glass noticed the tension between the two congregations.

“It was little things, like we’d have events with the kids on Saturday and some members would just come in and stare with mean faces,” Glass said. “At one point, they turned all the lights off while we were having an event and just walked out.”

Glass said he soon sensed that the actions of Raleigh White members had undertones of racism.

“They had a welcome sign on the marquee,” Glass said. “But if you were black, on that day you couldn’t get into Raleigh White.” This situation impelled the Mallary Baptist Association to withdraw from fellowship with Raleigh White until the church “repents” of the “chronic sin of racism against New Seasons,” the Christian Index reports."" (Kuruvilla, Carol)

This study shows that people of color are still shown prejudice. This is a big problem in TKAM, where the blacks are discriminated and looked down upon. As you can see, this is still a problem in society today.
