The first quote reminds me of this cartoon and other cartoons that show the difference between equality and equity. Equality is giving everyone the same thing. Equity is giving everyone what they need to succeed. Like Kozol says in the quote, equity does not mean equal funding, since each school has unequal needs. The schools that Kozol describes in his book will need much more than equal funding to succeed. With overcrowded, rotting buildings, they need to receive equitable funding to fix these issues and get the proper resources for giving their students a fair chance at educational success.

Distinguishing between equity and equality in education is still a prominent issue today, as it highlights that the same treatment given to every student without taking into account their various needs is detrimental to student learning. An example of how these quotes apply to modern day learning to me is resource allocation based on student and school needs. I can relate to this as I have an example of this happening in modern day education. Imagine that two schools receive the same exact amount of funding per student. However, one school serves a student population with a higher percentage of students from low-income families, English language learners, or students with special needs. The equal funding does not address the additional resources required to meet the diverse needs of these students. This is it is essential to go beyond equal funding and consider the diverse needs of students in order to achieve educational equity.

When I think about equity vs. equality, the first thing that comes to mind is this image. I know several of us have seen this in a few of the undergraduate courses. On the left side, we can see that everyone is given the exact same support. However, most of their needs are still not being met. Equity, on the other hand, provides exactly what each person needs. I think this connects with the first quote perfectly. This reminded me of obvious differences I have seen between schools with lots of funding and others with that barely receive it, if any at all. Students in wealthier towns are obviously gaining access to more resources and more comfortable learning environments. Contrarily, those in districts with less funding are not able to provide resources to support struggling students. Therefore, simply allocating the same amount of funds is not enough.

As an educator, it is so important to understand the difference between equality and equity. We need to make our classroom equitable by supplying various amounts of resources, assistance, and accommodations to our students in an equitable way. This relates to present day education and society as there is an active fight to make societal aspects "equal" however people often forget that equity os the only way to achieve true equality.

This quote to me means that education and politics go hand in hand. This is because educational systems are built upon societal aspects. This is relevant in todays society as us educators oftentimes find education and political aspects intertwined. We have to figure out how to teach controversial topics without any bias or leaning toward one side, all while TRYING not to upset parents.There are also many politcal groups found intervening in eductaional systems today such as the "moms for Liberty" gorup.

Equity vs equality is an important message for countries, states, districts, schools, teachers, and students. Not all people can accomplish things given the same resources. All humans are different and require different supports and interventions to reach the same goal. This is due to the nature of the goal and the nature of the person. With that being said, creating an equitable education will not create an equal education. Striving for equity means to strive for everyone to have the access they need to resources to achieve a desired result or progress.

Equality v. Equity is a very important concept for all students, teachers, and the community to understand. While I was completing my student teaching, I had a completed a lesson on these ideas so my students had a better understanding; I had used the picture we all know with the baseball field when we think of this, but it was already used therefore I uploaded something similar. In the picture it is clear there are two sides. On the left, everyone receives the same thing - 1 box. But that doesn't help the shorter kids to reach the apples from the tree. On the right, we can see that everyone gets what they specifically need to reach the apples from the tree. Now everyone can be "successful". In terms of education today, the only specific example that comes to mind is the area in which students live in. Students who live in wealthier areas, have access to better resources and teachers who are well trained, whereas those who live in lower socio-economic status areas they unfortunately face the opposite. It is upsetting as a future educator to know that students depending on where they live do not get to have the same opportunities as others or receive the same education. Furthermore, in my opinion, Kozol describes schools but they need more than just funding. They need more resources and better built institutions.
