Mussolini started as a newspaper editor and politician. He gained a lot of power and respect by writing in favor of the beliefs of the public and soldiers. Mussolini rose to power by mounting a campaign to overthrow the government. He gathered lots of support from the people and troops, which led to him threatening to take over the government by force. Mussolini claimed he would turn Italy back into the Roman Empire. The King of Italy felt intimidated by his power, so he made Mussolini Prime Minister.

When Mussolini took control of Italy, he appointed people to office that he knew he could trust. Additionally, only the Fascist Party existed so Mussolini was in control of the government and public. He dictated what information the press was able to write and the public was able to view. On the other hand, he created many new projects such as telephone lines, a train, and housing. These would greatly benefit society.

Mussolini eliminated all political parties except for the Fascist Party, a party that he founded. Other oppositions to the Fascist Party were eliminated as well, making Italy a one-party dictatorship. Fascists believed in a strong central government that would limit the rights of individuals. All aspects of society would be in the complete control of Mussolini.
